Organizations from around Gwinnett pooled together to build a new playground for a domestic violence shelter in Lawrenceville, Ga.
In just one day, about 100 volunteers turned an empty lot into a child's wonderland. Volunteers from around Gwinnett County teamed up to build a playground at the Partnership Against Domestic Violence's shelter in Lawrenceville, Ga. The groups who helped haul, hammer and hoist included Lilburn's Parkview High School's Beta Club, LexisNexis employees, KaBOOM! and Gwinnett Medical Center. The playground was built to the specifications of the shelter's children. Their requests included a rock wall, a playhouse and a fence painted with flowers and more. The $75,000 needed for the playground was donated by LexisNexis. Were you there? Click the "Upload Photos and Videos" button to share your pictures.

The Lawrenceville theater stored costumes and sets in a basement beneath shops on the square. A fire damaged that space earlier in the month.
Nearly two decades worth of work was lost following a fire on Crogan Street on March 4th. The Aurora Theatre housed costumes, props and furniture for their plays in a storage space beneath some of the shops on the square. Smoke and water destroyed a majority of the collection. It took 17 years for Aurora to gather the items, valued at about $250,000. “Let’s say you have a period piece,” said Al Stilo, Director of Sales & Marketing at Aurora Theatre. “You can’t just go get a Revolutionary War costume at Marshalls’ or Ross. You can’t just go to Walmart and get a monk’s costume.” The Lawrenceville community quickly came to help the theater following the fire. “A couple of people on the square let us take some items that were salvageable, …

A Lawrenceville, Ga. teenager turns tragedy into an opportunity to serve.
Teddy Bears are often a comfort item and best friend for a young child. Gabrielle Moore, 18, has dozens of the stuffed animals in her family's Lawrenceville home waiting for a new best friend. The Spelman College freshman is the founder of Bears for Babies, a program that gives teddy bears to children who have lost a parent. The passion Moore has for kids came out of personal tragedy. Her father committed suicide when she was 5 years old. Moore received a bow-tie wearing bear from her mother for her birthday. She named it after her dad. "My mom gave it to me to say that he was with me," Moore said. "That's when I started cherishing it and having a deep connection to it." That connection stayed with her and years later inspired what began …

Goodwill is reminding potential donors that the clock is running out for taxpayers to claim deductions for charitable donations for 2011. Dec. 31 is the last day that donations can be applied to the current tax year. As is usual this time of the year, Goodwill of North Georgia is gearing up for what is traditionally their busiest week of the year. “We anticipate serving nearly 67,000 donors this week alone,” said Elaine Armstrong, director of public relations for Goodwill. “We encourage families to gather items now because with the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s easy to forget items you intended to donate.” There are more than 100 locations where donors can give clothing, books, furniture and other household items. Long before the gates opened at 1p.m. at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville Saturday, the surrounding streets and I-85 northbound were jammed with waiting cars. The church partnered with the HoneyBaked Ham Corporation, Signature Foods, the Gwinnett Braves and Sunbelt Rentals to provide a “meal and more” to families affected by unemployment. Each family received a HoneyBaked Ham or turkey, a week’s worth of groceries, four tickets to a Gwinnett Braves home game in the 2012 season and a “Christmas is Love” CD, a project from 12Stone musicians. The idea for the giveaway began last year with a challenge from senior Pastor Kevin Myers for members to express their faith through …
