Darien Joseph Meheux, 18, of Lawrenceville, has been charged in the murder of the Valdosta State student.
An arrest has been made in the murder case of 17 year old Jasmine Benjamin of Lawrenceville. According to CBS Atlanta, Darien Joseph Meheux, 18, of Lawrenceville, turned himself in to the Schley County Sheriff's Office Thursday and was arrested. He was the boyfriend of Benjamin according to a private investigator hired by the girl's family. Benjamin was a freshman at Valdosta State University and a graduate of Central Gwinnett High School. Her body was found in a study room in her dorm in November 2012. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations determined she had been strangled to death. In July 2012, Meheux was arrested in connection to a string of crimes in a Lawrenceville neighborhood.

Family and friends planned to celebrate Jasmine Cathleen Benjamin's 18th birthday on Saturday. Instead, they will say their final goodbyes to her on Thursday evening. Her funeral will be held at 5pm at Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Home’s Gwinnett Chapel, 914 Scenic Highway, Lawrenceville. Viewing hours are Wednesday until 7pm. Benjamin was found dead in a study room at Valdosta State College, where the 17 year old Benjamin was a freshman, on Sunday, Nov. 18. On Sunday, Nov. 18, 17 year old Jasmine Cathleen Benjamin was found unresponsive on a couch in a study room at Valdosta State College, according to authorities. The Valdosta Daily Times reports Benjamin's death has not been definitively ruled a murder. “We are treating it as a homicide based off information and concerns provided by the medical examiner,” told Valdosta Police Department Cmdr. Brian Childress to the local paper. Childress told the Times that they do not have the information necessary to call it a "murder" yet and are reluctant to do so.
