Some legislators acknowledge the freebies can look bad, but they say the state's new ethics law will make it harder to mingle with constituents.
Georgia legislators who want to sit in the president's suite above the hedges at Sanford Stadium next year will have to pay their own way, thanks to ethics legislation signed by Gov. Nathan Deal last week. The law forbids elected officials from receiving gifts or event tickets exceeding $75. University System of Georgia lobbyists gave state and local lawmakers more than $14,000 in football tickets in 2012, the Athens Banner-Herald reports. The paper quotes state Sen. Once again, the Georgia Bulldogs have overcome an early loss to South Carolina to earn their way to the SEC title game. But before heading down the road to Atlanta, the Dawgs host instate rivals Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech. “We know we’re playing in Atlanta and that’s settled right now, but we know there’s a lot of work in the meantime, which is the job of getting better on a daily basis,” head coach Mark Richt said early this week. With eight wins, Georgia Southern is no slouch in the FCS league. Despite being the obvious favorite, the Dawgs expect a challenge both this Saturday and next. The triumphant Bulldogs return to Athens, back in the driver's seat in the SEC Eastern Division.
The Bulldogs did what they needed against Florida last week in what henceforth shall be known as the Hot Potato Bowl, but it wasn't pretty. The game produced more ugly turnovers than a remedial pastry class. Credit Georgia's resurgent defense for Florida's sloppiness. After a public chewing out by safety Shawn Williams leading up to the game, the Bulldogs were relentless. Junior linebacker Jarvis Jones' performance alone was enough to help earn him semifinalist status for two national awards, the Maxwell and the Bednarik. The Bulldogs could coast to an SEC East title - if they can get past the undefeated Gators.
So, in their last two games, Georgia got trounced by South Carolina and barely squeaked by the unimpressive Kentucky Wildcats. And yet, Bulldogs faithful are still talking about a shot at the SEC championship. Why? Because the Bulldogs have only one loss, and if they beat Florida on Saturday, a relatively gentle schedule gives them an opportunity to cruise to the SEC East title. The schedule is so favorable, an AP reporter suggested that Georgia "might be the most fortunate team in the nation." It might be better to be lucky than good, but are the Bulldogs good enough to beat a Florida team that wiped the floor with South Carolina, the team that wiped the floor with Georgia? There may not be anything more important this weekend in Georgia and South Carolina than what’s fixin’ to take place Saturday in Columbia. When the Gamecocks and Bulldogs square off in Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday at 7 p.m. (ESPN) in the biggest SEC football matchup of the season. It may be the biggest game in series history. The Bulldogs have a new mascot and high expectations going into the 2012 season.
First things first: There's a new Uga in town, and he's got a familiar face. The new Bulldog mascot, Uga IX, is none other than Russ, a frequent interim Uga during the line's tumultuous few years. The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Russ first saw Uga duty in 2009, when his half-brother, Uga VII, died. The selection is not without controversy, as some students the Banner-Herald interviewed are unhappy he's not a direct descendant of the original. Meanwhile, the human Bulldogs are preparing for their 2012 opener against Buffalo with some serious study. Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt got votes of confidence this week from former coach Vince Dooley and this week's opponent, Coastal Carolina Coach David Bennet, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. From UGA President Michael Adams, Richt got, at the very least, a reprieve. “I don’t believe I have ever commented on any coach mid-season,” the AJC quotes Adams saying. “What we do with every head coach, at the end of the season the AD sits down and makes a judgment.
