Loganville resident Verlin Gilliam was not successful in his attempt to challenge the Gwinnett County's trash plan and nor was Snellville resident Robert Mesteller. But Mesteller did not give up quite so easily, appealing the ruling that went against him all the way up to the Georgia Supreme Court. That too has been struck down though, according to The Gwinnett Daily Post. The holiday means some trash collection will be pushed back and county offices are closed.

Essentially all Gwinnett County offices will be closed on Thursday, November 22nd and on Friday, November 23rd, in observance of Thanksgiving. Only those necessary for the comfort and safety of residents will be open. A Magistrate Court judge will be available on those days at the Gwinnett County Detention Center. Trash and recycling pickups will be postponed for the holiday as well. Pickups scheduled for Thursday will take place Friday, and Fridays pickups will happen on Saturday. County offices and trash pickup will return to regular hours on Monday, November 26th.

Beginning in 2013, roughly 15,000 seniors will receive a 15 percent discount on Gwinnett County’s mandated trash service. Additionally, owners of vacant properties will be exempt from paying the fee if the owner has a valid vacant structure or boarding up permit. The Gwinnett Count Board of Commissioners approved the changes during this week's meeting. Seniors eligible for the discount are those age 65 and older with an annual income below $10,000 who have filed an L3A senior homestead exemption. Seniors 65 and older with incomes up to $25,000 and disabled people who qualify for the L5A or senior school exemption discount are also eligible. All Gwinnett County government offices will be closed on Monday, January 16th in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Only operations required for the comfort and safety of the County's citizens will be open. All offices will return to normal hours on Tuesday, January 17th. Trash and recycling will follow its regular schedule since MLK Day is not a trash and recycling holiday. However, the Gwinnett County Solid Waste and Recycling Call Center will be closed January 16th.
