A tornado watch is in effect for much of central and north Georgia until 4 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 30), according to the National Weather Service. The tornado watch area includes Gwinnett County. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable of development of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. The rough weather is expected to reach our area in the early afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, a squal line of strong thunderstorms was to push by into northwest Georgia by 11 a.m. Click here for updated local weather conditions, including radar, on WeatherBug.com, Patch's weather partner.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Lawrenceville and Gwinnett County. It is in effect from 1:20pm until 9pm. Other nearby counties including Barrow, DeKalb, Forsyth, Fulton and Hall are also under the Tornado Watch. Updated 2:42pm GCPS announced that all high schools have been released, however this will cause a delay with middle school and elementary school bus routes. ----- The following message was published on Gwinnett County Public School's website in light of Wednesday afternoon's tornado warning: With the heavy rain and weather watches in the area, a number of Gwinnett high schools affected by the weather are delaying dismissal to allow for the inclement weather to move through. Students will be held at school in a safe location until it is safe to dismiss students. Note that this will result in a delay of elementary and middle school bus routes later in the afternoon. Local firefighters are on their way to help those hit by Wednesday evening's tragic tornadoes in northwest Georgia. Members of the Gwinnett County Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team (TRT) left from their base at Fire Station #24, across from the Mall of Georgia in Buford at around 11am Thursday headed for Ringgold in Catoosa County. The seven TRT members are specifically trained in the disciplines of cave-in rescue, collapse rescue, confined space rescue, high-angle rope rescue and trench rescue. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency requested the help of the TRT. The team members do not yet know what their duty will be once they arrive at Ringgold, where seven people have been confirmed dead and more than a dozen buildings …
