Central Gwinnett vs. Collins Hill in Second Round of Soccer Playoffs

Eight Gwinnett County boys soccer teams play Wednesday in the second round of the Georgia High School Association playoffs.

Two all-Gwinnett matchups highlight the second round of the Georgia High School Association boys soccer playoffs on Wednesday, May 8. Central Gwinnett Among 27 Gwinnett County Teams to Reach State Soccer Playoffs

Defending champion Collins Hill boys, Berkmar and Brookwood will also be playing in the playoffs.

Collins Hill’s boys and Greater Atlanta Christian's girls begin their title defenses this week as the Georgia High School Association soccer tournament opens play throughout the state. In all, 27 Gwinnett County teams have qualified in five classifications. Most first-round games in the girls tournament begin Tuesday, April 30. The boys start play May 1. GGC Sweeps in Inaugural Games

The Grizzlies men's and women's soccer teams both won their matches Saturday, kicking off the Lawrenceville college's athletic program.

Georgia Gwinnett College kicked off their inaugural season of varsity sports in a big way Saturday. Both their men's and women's soccer team were victorious in their games on their newly constructed field in front of some 700 fans. The women's team played the first game in the school's history against Tennessee Temple University Saturday. Sophomore forward Amairani Almanza of Lilburn scored the first two goals for the Grizzlies. They went on to beat TTU 9-1. “It was a fantastic start out there by our team today,” said head women’s coach Domenic Martelli in a release. “We were so excited to see everything come together for the first time and we had a fantastic crowd out there. Grizzlies' First Intercollegiate Game Saturday

Georgia Gwinnett College's first ever game will be held Saturday at 1pm in Lawrenceville.

After two years of building staff, teams and playing fields, Georgia Gwinnett College will kick off their first season of intercollegiate sports this coming weekend. On Saturday at 1pm, GGC's women's soccer team will take on Tennessee Temple University. Then at 3pm, the Grizzlies' men's soccer team will face off against TTU's Crusaders. “This kickoff has been a long time in the making and is the result of hard work from a lot of committed people,” said Dr. Darin S. Wilson, Director of Athletics in a release. “We are thrilled about what lies ahead for our programs and we can’t wait to finally see our student-athletes in action in Grizzly green and gray.” Admission to both games is free. Silverbacks Sign Lawrenceville Midfielder Borfor Carr

The former Central Gwinnett High School player spent two years playing in Romania. He was born in Liberia and moved to Georgia when he was 14.

The Atlanta Silverbacks have signed attacking midfielder Lawrenceville's Borfor Carr, the club announced Friday, pending USSF approval. Carr, 24, comes to the Silverbacks after impressing on an extended trial during the team’s preseason training camp. The 5-foot-9 midfielder saw action in all of the Silverbacks' preseason games and contributed a goal in the team's win over Clayton State University. Born in Zwedru, Liberia, Carr and his family left the country due to civil unrest when he was 3 years old, relocating to the Ivory Coast. When he was 14, he moved to Lawrenceville with his family, where he would eventually star at the club level with Gwinnett Soccer Association and at the high school level at Central Gwinnett. GGC Names First Men's Soccer Coach

15 year veteran Steven DeCou will lead the Grizzlies' program.

Georgia Gwinnett College announced their new men's soccer head coach Wednesday. Steven DeCou was selected to lead the Grizzlies on and off the field. DeCou has 15 years experience coaching soccer. For the past five years, DeCou served as head men's soccer coach and assistant director of athletics at Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi. While at Belhaven, DeCou led the team to spots in the top-25 NAIA poll in 2009-2011. His teams made it to the Round of 16 in the NAIA tournament the last two years. In 2010, DeCou was named Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after finishing the season at 16-2-3. “Georgia Gwinnett represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” DeCou said in a release. “I’m excited to build a new …

I certainly hope so. My cousin played for a women's basketball team in Europe. It seems they support women's sports more. After college, there aren't a whole lot of options for female athletes.   more ›

Maurer Stars in Goal for Silverbacks

Lawrenceville native hopes to get back to MLS.

After being taken in the fourth round of the supplemental draft by the New York Red Bulls, Lawrenceville native Jimmy Maurer was released, but all was not lost. Now Maurer is with the Atlanta Silverbacks and is hoping to catch on with another MLS team. Maurer grew up in Flower's Crossing near Brookwood but went to St. Pius. After high school Maurer started 78 games for the University of South Carolina and had 28 shutouts. Maurer began playing soccer like every other child at the age of three in the youth league. By the time he was eight, he started playing on Select teams. "I started traveling around like crazy and had a lot of different coaches as I was growing up," Maurer said.
