The City of Lawrenceville and Gwinnett County celebrated the recent renovations.
City and County officials were on hand for a ribbon cutting ceremony at Rhodes Jordan Park Tuesday. The park recently underwent renovations. Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson was there, along with her great nieces, Kathryn and Elizabeth Carter. The three year old twins are Rhodes Jordans' great-granddaughters. The Gwinnett Board of Education sees decision as a vote of confidence in their work.
At a quick Gwinnett County Board of Education meeting last night, a theme of thankfulness was present. While some mentioned the upcoming holiday, all gave thanks to Gwinnett County residents for passing the one-penny sales tax, or E-SPLOST, in the Nov. 8 election. “It’s very confirming, very heartening,” said District 2 Board Member Daniel D. Seckinger of the public’s confidence in the board to do right with their tax dollars and their support of education. District 3 Board Member Dr. Mary Kay Murphy also expressed gratitude. She pointed to the important roll the SPLOST funds have played in helping Gwinnett schools keep up with tremendous growth in the area in years past. “We hope this will help us get ahead of the growth,” she said. …

Today, voters in Lawrenceville will decide who will fill two City Council seats and if stores will be allowed to sell alcohol by the package. Bob Clark, Eric Reid and Brad Sullivan are vying for the Post 3 seat up for grabs after Katie Hart Smith announced she would not seek re-election. Renita Hamilton and Rex Millsaps are both hoping to take the Post 4 seat from incumbent Peter "P.K." Martin IV. Polls will be open at City Hall at 70 S. Clayton St. from 7am until 7pm. Gwinnett County will also be voting on an extension of the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax or E-SPLOST. The current SPLOST for schools is set to expire June 2012. The Senior Recreation Center at Bethesda Park is set to reopen to the public today. The 20 year old center was the first of its kind in Gwinnett County. It is opening its doors again after undergoing major renovations this summer. Renovations to the Senior Center were funded by the 2005 Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The upgrades include the replacement of lighting and plumbing fixtures with more energy-efficient models, countertops, cabinets and reception desk, as well as new floor, ceiling and wall coverings. The center also received a new commercial-grade kitchen with money provided through the federally funded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.

The Regional Roundtable stamped a list of projects that will be on the 2012 ballot for a one-penny sales tax.
A $6.1 billion list of transportation projects was adopted by the Regional Roundtable today, according to Jim Jaquish of the ARC. This completes the Roundtable’s work--and also determines what will be on the July 2012 ballot for a 10-year, one-penny sales tax that could mean a historic change in Atlanta area transportation. The final report was posted on the Roundtable's website early Thursday afternoon. The Roundtable, which was chaired by Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, has deliberated, drafted and re-drafted since June, trying to settle on a group of projects that will entice the whole region. Gwinnett residents who want to offer input on a draft list of projects to be funded by the Transportation SPLOST in 2012 will have a chance Monday. The Atlanta Regional Commission will host a transportation roundtable from 5-7 p.m. at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center. This forum is one of 12 being held around the region as the Roundtable solicits feedback from the public on the more than $6 billion in transportation investments, the ARC said in a news release. On Tuesday, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved of the installation of more traffic cameras and fiber-optic cables throughout the county. The added devices will monitor traffic flow and allow for real-time, remote-control adjustments from the Gwinnett Traffic Control Center. The new traffic-management equipment will be installed on a six-mile stretch of Pleasant Hill Road between Lawrenceville Highway/U.S. 29 and Buford Highway/U.S. 23. A nearly three-mile stretch of Buford Drive/State Route 20 between I-985 and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard near the Mall of Georgia will also get the cameras and cables. Both contracts were awarded to the lowest bidder, R.J. Haynie, Inc. Both projects cost a combined total of $847,668. …

Officials discuss progress of sales tax funded projects.
County and city officials met at Fire Station 18 in Hoschton to discuss how Gwinnett County special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) dollars are being spent. Rhonda Etheridge, deputy director of financial services for Gwinnett County, presented an overview of what SPLOST is meant to accomplish and what the county has done with the money. Etheridge noted part of the money has funded multiple Gwinnett County fire stations, including Station 18. SPLOST proceeds have also funded numerous projects at county recreational facilites.
