Recycling Electronics, Shred Papers at Coolray Field This Weekend

The free event is part of an Earth Day 2013 celebration in Gwinnett.

Going through spring cleaning at home? Gwinnett is offering a chance to recycle that old stuff this weekend at Lawrenceville's Coolray Field. According to a Gwinnett County news release, the Solid Waste and Recovered Materials’ Earth Day celebration will be Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The event is free, and includes paper shredding, electronics recycling ($10 cash charge to recycle TVs), tire recycling (limit eight tires per vehicle, no dealer tires) and paint collection (limit five one-gallon paint cans per vehicle; no paint thinners, stains, spackle, oil paint cans, rusted paint cans or dried-up paint). Recycle Your Christmas Tree and Help Beautify Gwinnett County

Bring your Christmas tree to one of these locations in Lawrenceville and help Gwinnett County parks and properties.

Now that Christmas has come and passed, what to do with that old tree? Rather than just dragging the tired tree to the curb, why not give it a second life?   Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful is asking you to bring your old tannenbaums to their annual "Bring One for the Chipper" tree recycling campaign. From now until Jan. 18, 2013, Gwinnett County residents can take their undecorated Christmas trees to one of several locations for recycling. Some Gwinnett Seniors To Get Trash Discount

The 15 percent discount will begin next year.

Beginning in 2013, roughly 15,000 seniors will receive a 15 percent discount on Gwinnett County’s mandated trash service. Additionally, owners of vacant properties will be exempt from paying the fee if the owner has a valid vacant structure or boarding up permit. The Gwinnett Count Board of Commissioners approved the changes during this week's meeting. Seniors eligible for the discount are those age 65 and older with an annual income below $10,000 who have filed an L3A senior homestead exemption. Seniors 65 and older with incomes up to $25,000 and disabled people who qualify for the L5A or senior school exemption discount are also eligible. City of Lawrenceville Recycling Day

The city will offer recycling and shred your papers for you this weekend.

  Do you have piles of old documents sitting in your office? Empty paint cans in your garage? A cell phone you upgraded just thrown in a drawer. Well, the City of Lawrenceville will help you discard of them safely this Saturday. The city is hosting a Recycling Day Saturday, May 5th from 9am until 1pm in the old police station parking lot at 20 S. Clayton St. They will be accepting the following: The event is open to residents and non-residents.

Gwinnett County Has Joined the "Poop Power Revolution"

The County Water Resource Department has begun using methane gas, generated by sewerage, to power its plant.

Gwinnett County has joined the "Poop Power Revolution," announcing Thursday its Water Resource department has started generating its own electricity using methane gas, a byproduct of sewage treatment. “We’re making good use of a renewable, previously wasted resource to help cut operating costs and keep water rates low for Gwinnett residents,” said Lynn Smarr, acting director of Water Resources. The project, known as POWER (Processing Organic Waste for Energy Recovery), won an environmental sustainability award from the Atlanta Regional Commission earlier this year. Officials said a new gas-to-energy facility at the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources plant near Buford can produce up to 40 percent of the plant’s energy needs plus all the heat it …
