The Oconee County Sheriff's Office and the Barrow County Sheriff's Office conducted a joint undercover operation using Backpage.com. Nine people in all were arrested.
A Lawrenceville woman was among nine people were taken into custody at SpringHill Suites in Oconee County Thursday, charged with pandering and prostitution following an undercover investigation by the Oconee County Sheriff's Office and Barrow County Sheriff's Office. Undercover deputies placed multiple ads for solicitation on the free classified ads website Backpage.com. and also responded to existing ads, Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry said. Plans for the operation had been in the works for about two months, he said. Gwinnett County Police say one of their own was arrested in Barrow County and has since resigned. Cpl. Brian Kelly, a former Public Information Officer for GCPD, was arrested on May 31st by the Barrow County Sheriff's Department. Kelly was charged with pandering, or soliciting an act of prostitution. According to a release by GCPD, Kelly did not inform Barrow officials that he was as an officer for Gwinnett County. Kelly also did not let his supervisors in Gwinnett immediately know of his arrest, as required by GCPD's policy. As a result, Kelly was served with a letter of intent to terminate his employment. University of Georgia German professor Max Roland Reinhart was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on Thursday night on charges of prostitution and keeping a place of prostitution. Reinhart is A. G. Steer Professor in Goethe Studies in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies and a well-known scholar. According to University policy in the the UGA Office of Legal Affairs,"any current employee charged with a crime (other than a minor traffic offense) shall report being charged with such crime to the Office of Legal Affairs within 72 hours of the employee becoming aware of such charge.
