A new name for an old mall. Starting in October, Discover Mills Mall will change its name to Sugarloaf Mills Mall. This change comes as the mall in unincorporated Lawrenceville ends its 10-year naming sponsorship with the Discover Card. “Sugarloaf Mills will continue to deliver our unique brand of shopping, which is a big draw for local residents, as well as Atlanta area visitors who love the thrill of shopping for great value,” said Gregg Goodman, President of The Mills in a release. “We are excited to brand the property with this relevant name already recognized because of Sugarloaf Parkway, which will better reflect the area and make it more identifiable to direct customers to the property.” New signage, website and other promotional …

In 2008, demolition began on the Essex Drive subdivision beside the Avenue at Webb Gin to make way for a new shopping complex. The homes were bought for a whopping $11 million, and subsequently destroyed, but the shopping center never came to fruition. A total of 34 acres were created for development. (The Sola Fide Lutheran Church sold 12 acres.) Now, that area is consumed by weeds and stands empty. However, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post, the land is now under new ownership. "We are very excited to move forward with this project and are continuing to work with the adjacent neighborhoods to come up with a set of zoning conditions that will assure both sides of a successful development that will be an asset to the community," said …

The nation's largest owner of retail shopping malls has given up on Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth, according to a published report. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Simon Property Group, which also owns Discover Mills Mall in Lawrenceville and the Mall of Georgia in Buford, has "disposed of (its) interest in" the mall, which is now only 83 percent occupied. Previously, Simon had transferred a $115 million loan on the mall to a special servicer, though the AJC reported that the special servicer is not the new owner. Also, Simon will continue to manage the mall “for the foreseeable future,” a company spokesperson said. In response to Simon Property Group's disposal of its interest in the mall, the Gwinnett Place Community …

Simon Properties reportedly missed payment on a $135 million loan.
More troubles for Gwinnett County malls. Analytics firm Trepp reports Simon Property Group missed a balloon payment on Discover Mills Mall. The company has a $135 million loan on the 1.2 million square foot mall which was built in 2001. According to Trepp, Simon has "found it challenging to land take-out financing" on the mall, which has leases for anchor stores about to expire or recently expired. Off Saks' lease was up in November while Burlington Coat Factory, Books-a-Million and Last Call Neiman Marcus' leases all expire in January 2012. The mall has an occupancy rate of 79 percent as of the third quarter. Earlier this month, Duluth Patch reported on the financial woes Simon Property Group is facing with Gwinnett Place Mall.
