Driver Charged in Fatal Pedestrian Accident on Lawrenceville Hwy

The driver, Sharon Mitchell-Golden of Stone Mountain has been charged in the accident that killed a Lawrenceville, Ga. teen.

Gwinnett County Police say the driver involved in the fatal pedestrian accident on Lawrenceville Highway Wednesday morning has now been charged. In a release, GCPD Cpl. Jake Smith said Sharon Mitchell-Golden, 49, of Stone Mountain, turned herself in to police Thursday. Mitchell-Golden has been charged with second degree vehicular homicide, a misdemeanor, and driving more than 300 feet in the center turn lane.  Mitchell-Golden reportedly struck 17 year old Dakota M. Waters of Lawrenceville as he tried to cross Lawrenceville Highway between Hamilton Road and James Road at around 7:30am. Waters was reportedly standing in the center lane as Mitchell-Golden was unable to stop her 2007 Land Rover and hit the teen. Waters was taken to Gwinnett …

Also, I feel sorry for the driver. People don't expect someone to be in a turn lane. I think she was probably NOT speeding since most drivers are slowing down before they make a turn. She must be devastated. I'm praying for her.   more ›

Teen Struck and Killed Crossing Lawrenceville Hwy

The victim has been identified as Dakota M. Waters, 17 of Lawrenceville, Ga.

Gwinnett County Police say a 17 year old was hit by a car while trying to cross Lawrenceville Highway Wednesday morning.  According to Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter, Dakota M. Waters was trying cross the multi-lane road between Hamilton Rd and James Rd just before 7:30am. A driver of a Land Rover was driving northbound and moved into the center lane to turn left on to James Road. Waters was reportedly standing in that center lane, the driver was unable to stop and hit the teen.  Waters was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition and later died. Police, Parents Seeking Answers Following R&B Singer's Death

Singer and actress Natina Reed was killed after being struck by a car in unincorporated Lawrenceville, Ga. late Friday evening.

Gwinnett County Police are looking to speak to anyone who can provide more insight into the accidental death of singer and actress Natina Reed. Reed, 32, was reportedly walking in the road on Lawrenceville Highway late Friday night when she was struck and killed near Hamilton Rd. The driver of the car did stop to call 911 and will not face charges. However, GCPD investigators are still looking for answers. They would like to speak to "anyone who might have information about anything that could help us determine why she was there, anything to help us understand how this came together,” said GCPD spokesman Sgt. Rich Long to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Reed's parents also want to know where their daughter was coming from and where she …

More Traffic Monitoring Coming to Gwinnett

Board of Commissioners approved the installation of more traffic cameras and other equipment, could be good news for commuters.

On Tuesday, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved of the installation of more traffic cameras and fiber-optic cables throughout the county. The added devices will monitor traffic flow and allow for real-time, remote-control adjustments from the Gwinnett Traffic Control Center.  The new traffic-management equipment will be installed on a six-mile stretch of Pleasant Hill Road between Lawrenceville Highway/U.S. 29 and Buford Highway/U.S. 23. A nearly three-mile stretch of Buford Drive/State Route 20 between I-985 and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard near the Mall of Georgia will also get the cameras and cables. Both contracts were awarded to the lowest bidder, R.J. Haynie, Inc. Both projects cost a combined total of $847,668. …
