Death of Lawrenceville College Student Not Yet Ruled Murder

Jasmine Cathleen Benjamin was found dead in a study room at Valdosta State College. Her funeral is planned for this week.

On Sunday, Nov. 18, 17 year old  Jasmine Cathleen Benjamin was found unresponsive on a couch in a study room at Valdosta State College, according to authorities. The Valdosta Daily Times reports Benjamin's death has not been definitively ruled a murder.  “We are treating it as a homicide based off information and concerns provided by the medical examiner,” told Valdosta Police Department Cmdr. Brian Childress to the local paper.  Childress told the Times that they do not have the information necessary to call it a "murder" yet and are reluctant to do so.  Valdosta Police are working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and not the FBI as other media outlets had previously reported.
