I-85 Traffic Congestion to Reach 'Unacceptable Levels' Without Mitigation Efforts Says GDOT

The computer animated video explains how toll lanes from Old Peachtree Road to Hamilton Mill Road would operate.

If you missed last month's public hearings regarding the extension of the I-85 toll lanes northward, you can now learn more about the project courtesy of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The GDOT recently posted a short computer animated video depicting how the new toll lanes will operate (see above).  The GDOT has proposed extending the toll lanes from Old Peachtree Road near Suwanee to Hamilton Mill Road, in the Dacula/Buford area. As part of the project, an additional lane would be constructed to avoid losing capacity in the free lanes. According to GDOT, the new toll lanes would provide reliable travel times, improved commute alternatives and expanded commuting choices (see pdf). In the presentation, GDOT explains …

Expect Traffic Delays if You Travel I-85 This Weekend

GDOT closing lanes in Gwinnett Saturday and Sunday.

Georgia Department of Transportation announced today that road work will continue this weekend to upgrade the I-85 express lanes between S.R. 120 and Boggs Road and has advised motorists to expect traffic delays. Following is GDOT's report: This weekend, motorists should prepare for possible traffic disruptions and delays due to southbound and northbound I-85 Express Lane closures. The closures, which will begin on I-85 near Duluth Highway/SR 120, will accommodate construction for a permanent southbound Express Lane access point near the Boggs Road overpass. The permanent access point will replace the temporary entry point installed in January 2012 to provide earlier Express Lane access between Old Peachtree and Indian Trail Roads. …

Gwinnett Residents Invited to "Wireside Chat"

Lawrenceville residents will have a chance to have their transportation questions answered.

Gwinnett County residents are invited to join local officials and transportation experts by phone on June 7 to learn about the upcoming Regional Transportation Referendum on the ballot July 31.  Inspired by President Roosevelt’s “Fireside Chat” during World War II in which he detailed the progress of the war while citizens followed along at home using a world map, Gwinnett officials will field calls on June 7 at 6:15 p.m. in what is called a Wireside Chat. They will discuss and answer questions about the projects on the list while participants follow along using a regional map. Residents are asked to register in advance to receive maps and other materials they can refer to during the call. The call will last about an hour. All questions …

New Lane on 316 Opens to Ease Traffic Tie Ups

The new lane opened to traffic in Gwinnett County Friday afternoon.

The new lane on State Route 316 eastbound officially opened Friday in time for rush hour. The third lane extends from the split from I-85 end becomes the ramp for the Sugarloaf exit on 316.  "Afternoon commutes are a lot smoother because of this project," said Gwinnett County District 3 Commissioner Mike Beaudreau. "If you were to take a picture of the road down here where the actual lane was constructed all the way to Sugarloaf, a few months ago you would have seen a huge bottleneck. It would back up for an eighth to a quarter of a mile, and now there are virtually no merging issues. It's been a huge enhancement." Beaudreau said the approximately $2.5 million dollars for the project came from Gwinnett County SPLOST funds. Construction …

Gwinnett Seeking Public Input on Improving I-85

Sessions will be held in Norcross and Duluth on improving traffic flow.

Gwinnett County government and business leaders are offering the public the chance to learn about and comment on efforts to improve traffic flow on I-85. Sessions on the I-85 Transit Study will be held: Both sessions will be 5-7 p.m. “I encourage everyone to be informed and engaged throughout this process,” said Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash in a news release. “With 467,000 commuters passing through the I-85 corridor daily, it is important that we study ways to help movement in the corridor. Of course, we want to hear the thoughts and opinions of residents and businesses.” Gwinnett County, in collaboration with Gwinnett Place and Gwinnett Village Community Improvement Districts and the Federal Transit Administration, is …

Expand the existing MARTA rail system from Doraville to Hamilton Mill or the Mall of Georgia. Don't stop at Gwinnett Place. Light Rail is NOT the answer for Gwinnett. We need fast, frequent, high capacity heavy rail, the same technology that MARTA uses. Gwinnett already pays a SPLOST tax towards transit, so why can't that be rolled over into the MARTA sales tax? Gwinnett has enough roads, but we …   more ›

HOT Lane Rates Reduced During Off-Peak Hours

SRTA has reduced toll rates from 10-90 to 1-90 cents per mile, effectively reducing the cost to ride in the I-85 express lanes when the traffic is lighter.

The State Road and Tollway Authorityannounced it has reduced the cost of driving on the I-85 Express Lanes. Instead of costing between 10-90 cents per mile depending on traffic flow, it will cost between 1-90 cents per mile. So now when the traffic flow is light, it will cost you less to drive in the toll lanes. According to a news release on the Peach Pass website, this went into immediate effect when passed by the SRTA Board on Friday. “We are pleased to institute this operational improvement for our customers,” SRTA Executive Director Gena L. Evans said in the release. “Now motorists using the Express Lanes during off peak hours could pay as low as 16 cents for the full distance of an Express Lanes trip.” Rates given as typical off-peak…

New Coalition to Fight H.O.T. Lanes

Stolen Lanes, a new group, combines the efforts of several local initiatives.

The fight against H.O.T. lanes and Peach Passes is stepping it up a notch. A new coalition, called "Stolen Lanes," combines the work of three trumpeters against Georgia's decision to introduce toll lanes in the metro Area, including Gwinnett County. Founders include: Howard Rodgers, of "Stop the Hot Lane;" Chris Haley of "Stop Peach Pass"; and Victor Ramkissoon, of "Against the Georgia Peach Pass." "The number of people opposed to the recent implementation of the H.O.T. lanes keeps growing," said Ramkisson, of Snellville, in a statement on the "Stolen Lanes" website. "This is not a problem that will go away without acknowledgement of the issue and a plan to correct it by SRTA (Georgia State Road & Tollway Authority) and the Georgia …
