GGC Sweeps in Inaugural Games

The Grizzlies men's and women's soccer teams both won their matches Saturday, kicking off the Lawrenceville college's athletic program.

Georgia Gwinnett College kicked off their inaugural season of varsity sports in a big way Saturday. Both their men's and women's soccer team were victorious in their games on their newly constructed field in front of some 700 fans. The women's team played the first game in the school's history against Tennessee Temple University Saturday. Sophomore forward Amairani Almanza of Lilburn scored the first two goals for the Grizzlies. They went on to beat TTU 9-1. “It was a fantastic start out there by our team today,” said head women’s coach Domenic Martelli in a release. “We were so excited to see everything come together for the first time and we had a fantastic crowd out there. Grizzlies' First Intercollegiate Game Saturday

Georgia Gwinnett College's first ever game will be held Saturday at 1pm in Lawrenceville.

After two years of building staff, teams and playing fields, Georgia Gwinnett College will kick off their first season of intercollegiate sports this coming weekend. On Saturday at 1pm, GGC's women's soccer team will take on Tennessee Temple University. Then at 3pm, the Grizzlies' men's soccer team will face off against TTU's Crusaders. “This kickoff has been a long time in the making and is the result of hard work from a lot of committed people,” said Dr. Darin S. Wilson, Director of Athletics in a release. “We are thrilled about what lies ahead for our programs and we can’t wait to finally see our student-athletes in action in Grizzly green and gray.” Admission to both games is free. GGC Lands Division I’s Hodges as First Tennis Coach

Chase Hodges comes to the school in Lawrenceville, Ga. from Georgia State University.

GGC Names Ian Potter an Assistant Athletic Director

The Berkmar grad will oversee Compliance, Academic Services and Game Operations.

Georgia Gwinnett College announced Tuesday that Ian Potter has been hired as the school's Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, Academic Services and Game Operations. Potter previously worked in a similar position at Augusta State since 2007. In this position, Potter will make sure GGC is in compliance with policies regarding athletic eligibility, financial aid, academic standing, team participation, recruiting activities, playing & practice seasons, camps/clinics and amateurism. GGC Hires First Baseball Coach

An assistant coach for Georgia State will become the Grizzlies' first baseball head coach.

Georgia Gwinnett College threw out the first pitch in fielding their first baseball team. The college announced they've hired Brad Stromdahl as the team's first head coach. Stromdahl comes from Georgia State University where he served as an assistant baseball coach under Greg Frady for the last six years. He has 13 total years of experience coaching collegiate baseball. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to start a baseball program and athletic department from scratch,” said Stromdahl in a release. “GGC offers an absolutely outstanding opportunity for this community to grow together, both academically and as a baseball program.” Stromdahl played catcher in junior college and NCAA Division II at Southwestern Minnesota State University …

GGC Unveils Plans for New Athletic Complex

The Grizzlies will take to the field in 2012.

Georgia Gwinnett College unveiled plans for their new athletic complex. The $12 million facility will be built on the hillside on Collins Hill Rd., just north of the college's main entrance. GGC Names School's First Athletics Director

Dr. Darin Wilson will help shape Georgia Gwinnett College's athletic future.

Georgia Gwinnett College took a major step towards bringing intercollegiate sports to campus Thursday morning with the announcement of its first athletics director, Dr. Darin Wilson. Wilson comes to GGC after serving as athletic director at Union College in Barbourville, KY. His 18 year connection at Union began when he was a student-athlete. Wilson then became a baseball coach and ultimately the athletic director in 2003. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to build an athletics program from the ground up,” Wilson said in a release. “I am most excited to develop a program that will be integrated with GGC’s emphasis on learning and leadership.
