Georgia Gwinnett Graduates More Than 270

More than 270 students donned their caps and gowns Friday, as they graduated from Georgia Gwinnett College.  It was a notable graduation for the young college in Lawrenceville for a number of reasons. GGC graduated their 1,000th student, welcomed their first double major and double degree graduates and their first Fulbright Scholar. The commencement was also the last for GGC's founding president Dr. Daniel Kaufman. He will step down at the end of June to become president of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce. Lawrenceville Student GGC's First Fulbright Scholar

Seijin Tranberg, who will graduate magna cum laude from Georgia Gwinnett College Friday, is the college’s first Fulbright Scholar. He will spend a year in South Korea before going to graduate school.

Ambassador Andrew Young to Speak at GGC Commencement

The former U.N. Ambassador and mayor of Atlanta will address the class of 2013.

Former Atlanta mayor and Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Youngwas chosen as Georgia Gwinnett College's commencement speaker for the May 17th ceremony. “Ambassador Young is one of our nation’s most inspiring leaders,” said GGC President Daniel Kaufman in a release. “His many public service roles give him a unique perspective on the issues and opportunities facing graduates entering today’s global economy. His life demonstrates what a dedicated citizen can do for his community, state and nation. His perspectives are uniquely appropriate for our graduating seniors.” Young worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the civil rights movement. Gov. Deal Signs Education Bill at Georgia Gwinnett College

H.B. 131 will help students dually enrolled in high school and college.

Gov. Nathan Deal was at Georgia Gwinnett College Friday to sign H.B. 131 into law. The bill, introduced by Lawrenceville State Representative Valerie Clark, allows students dually enrolled in high school and college to apply their college credits towards their application for the HOPE Scholarships. Patch will have more on this story.

Georgia Gwinnett College is currently hiring for a Campus Police Officer. The person in this position will protect life and property at the Lawrenceville school. Responsibilities include guarding buildings, grounds and facilities against loss or damage and enforcing campus traffic and parking regulations. The Campus Police Officer will patrol GGC by police vehicle, bicycle or foot. They will also investigate disturbances, suspicious circumstances, traffic accidents and more. Decision to Leave Georgia Gwinnett was Not an Easy One Says Kaufman

"Opportunities have come along that wouldn’t have come along," GGC President Dr. Daniel Kaufman told Lawrenceville Patch as he reflects on his tenure at the college and his decision to take the position of President and CEO of the Gwinnett Chamber.

The news is still new to Georgia Gwinnett College and the Lawrenceville community. GGC’s charter president, Dr. Daniel Kaufman, announced late Thursday afternoon he is stepping down. His last day will be June 30th. On July 1st, Kaufman begins his new role as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce. Lawrenceville Patch spoke with Kaufman via phone Friday morning about his decision to leave GGC before he left on a pre-planned trip.
