The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology finished third out of more than 21,000 public high schools nationwide.
One of the best schools in the nation is right in our own backyard. The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Lawrenceville was ranked the third best public high school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Only the School for the Talented and Gifted in Dallas, TX and BASIS Tuscon in Tuscon, AZ ranked higher. U.S. News and World Report used three factors to determine the rankings. First, analysts looked at how well students at the schools performed statewide. Second, if less advantaged students (defined as black, Hispanic and low-income) performed better than their peers in the state. Thousands of high school students will graduate this May in Gwinnett County. Now, the list is out for the 2013 graduation schedule. See below the list of graduations. First up is Lawrenceville's Phoenix High School on May 20 at 7 p.m. The last school to graduate students is Archer High School at 7 p.m., May 25. (Don't forget you can add graduation announcements to Patch.)

On Feb. 11, Gwinnett County Public Schools completed the lottery drawing for placement in the freshman class of Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology.

Gwinnett County Public Schools announced the results of a special lottery held for placement in the freshman class of the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology located in Lawrenceville. Of the 847 students who applied for the school, only 350 spots were available. The other 497 students were placed on a waiting list in the order they were drawn. The lottery will take place at the school district office for the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology. Registered parents and students need not be present to win a spot in the upcoming 2013-2014 ninth-grade class.

Due to overwhelming response, the Gwinnett County school district will hold a lottery to fill the incoming freshman class at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Lawrenceville. Online registration concluded on Feb. 1, and there were 847 students registered. However, the school can only accept 350 students for 2013-2014. The lottery will be held Monday, February 11, 2013, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the school district’s Instructional Support Center (ISC), 437 Old Peachtree Rd., NW in Suwanee. Students who completed the registration process were assigned a lottery number and have been notified by email of their number, as well as the lottery time, date, and location. After graduating from Archer, Melissa Thomas will attend the University of Georgia in the fall where she plans on majoring in nursing. In the future, Thomas hopes to become a Pediatric Oncology nurse at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She is the daughter of Mike and Sandi Thomas and is an honor student, musician and athlete. The National Honor Society, Beta Club and the Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the volleyball and basketball teams are just a few of her activities. Thomas is the recipient of the Hugh O’Brien Youth leadership Award (HOBY), AP Scholar Award and more. In Gwinnett County, 9,843 students are expected to graduate from the county's 21 public high schools. This year's graduating class, described as the largest ever according to Gwinnett County Public Schools, was also an accomplished according to CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks. “As a community, we can be proud of these students and what they have achieved during their academic careers," Wilbanks said in a released statement. Three students at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology hope their project is out of this world... Literally. Seniors Shawn Albert of Snellville and Aditya Ragunathan of Duluth, along with junior Brian Barr of Dacula entered Lenovo and YouTube's Science Lab Competition. On Wednesday, they received word that they were chosen as one of 60 finalists worldwide. The competition is for students all across the globe. Students between the ages of 14 and 18 had to design a science project to be performed in space on the International Space Station and streamed live on YouTube. Congratulations are in order for the five teachers at Lawrenceville schools who were named semifinalists in the search for Gwinnett County Public Schools' Teacher of the Year. GCPS announced 25 semifinalists on Wednesday. Fifteen elementary school teachers, five middle school and five high school teachers were received the honor. They were chosen out of an initial 129 from each school and were selected by their colleagues at that school. The five Lawrenceville honorees are: The 2012 Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year will be announced in November at an annual banquet.
