Video: Fireworks Safety Tips From Gwinnett Fire

Stay safe this New Years when handling sparklers.

The Gwinnett County Fire Department held a demo to show how to safely use fireworks and sparklers this season. According to the department, statistics show that in 2010 there were an estimated 8,600 injuries caused by fireworks treated in the U.S. hospital emergency rooms. While the only type of fireworks legal in Georgia are sparklers, the National Fire Protection Association reports that sparklers can cause serious burn injuries. They burn at about 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and are typically viewed by parents as relatively harmless fireworks for children, according to Gwinnett Fire. Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens, Gwinnett Fire Marshal/Assistant Chief Steve Hrustich and Georgia State Fire Marshal Dwayne Garriss demonstrated …

Illegal Fireworks Cause Fire at Local Businesses

Two Lawrenceville, Ga. businesses were damaged by fire and smoke.

  Gwinnett County Fire Investigators say illegal fireworks caused damage to two business in Lawrenceville.  Crews were called to World Finance and Las Canas at a shopping plaza at 1956 Duluth Hwy at 4:35am Thursday. When they got there, they found smoke and fire coming from the center of the roof. They were able to quickly extinguish the fire on the roof. The roof over World Finance suffered minor damage. That business also had minor damage inside due to fire and water used as firefighters fought the flames. Las Canas also suffered minor damage and the front glass door was broken as firefighters forced it open. No injuries were reported. While packing the sandwiches, soda and picnic blanket for an evening out to celebrate Independence Day be sure to make arrangements for the family pet. The Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve are the two holidays each year where the highest number of pets go astray. According to Gwinnett County Animal Shelter, at least 10 pets went missing in Gwinnett on July 4 last year. “The fireworks really just scare these poor animals to death “ said Lt. Mary Lou Respess, manager of the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter. With an increased capacity for hearing, some animals are especially sensitive to loud noises and are frightened by both the sound and the bursts of color of a huge firework display. G-Braves Fireworks, Military Appreciation Night

Fireworks to light up sky after Gwinnett Braves game tonight against IronPigs at Coolray Field.

Tonight (May 30) is Military Appreciation Night at the Gwinnett Braves Game at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. The G-Braves play the Lehigh Valley IronPigs starting at 7:05 p.m. Fireworks will light up the night sky after the game. In-game Memorial Day ceremonies and special videos are also planned. As a special promotion at tonight’s game, there will be a camo jersey auction presented by Kipper Tool. Check the G-Braves website for special discounts and promotions. Tuesdays, for instance, are Kraft Singles Nights. Bring a wrapper from a package of Kraft Cheese Singles and get 2-1 tickets. That discount will apply to the May 31 game. Safety First When It Comes to Fireworks this New Year's Eve

Some fireworks safety tips from Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Many people throughout Lawrenceville plan to ring in 2011 with a festive fireworks display. The Gwinnett County Department of Fire & Emergency Services is offering some tips and reminders to keep you safe as you celebrate the new year: If you have any left over fireworks, be sure to store them in a cool, dry place and out of reach of children or pets. And keep them away from open flames. When you're ready to throw out fireworks, remember to always soak them in water for several hours before you toss them out.
