Patch readers from across Georgia have voted, and this boxer from Dacula is the big winner of our Top Dog contest.
Readers, we got 546 votes in our Georgia Top Dog contest and our runaway winner is boxer Maya Sweetheart with a whopping 121 votes! When you’re competing in a field of 10 finalists, that’s a big chunk of the voting. Five-year-old Maya lives with Heather and Brodie Gruver, their two children, and another boxer in Dacula. “She’s protective over the kids and over the house, very loving and very smart,” said Heather Gruver, who entered Maya’s photo into our contest. “She’s part of the family. Like any dog owner would say, she’s definitely become another family member, not just a pet.” May was born on Feb. 14, 2007, making her a Valentine’s Day puppy. The Gruver’s took Maya home when she was about six weeks old. One day, when Maya was about …

You have until 5 p.m. today to vote. Cast your ballot now!
Readers, we are happy to report that you submitted more than 700 photos of your canine companions to our Top Dog in Georgia photo contest. You shared photos of tiny Chihuahuas, and one of a 170-pound mastiff. You shared the picture of the loyal standard poodle who waits for the children at the school bus stop. There was also the basset hound that somehow got onto the kitchen counter. (We suspect he got help with that feat.) There were therapy dogs, dogs in tutus, nappers, ball fetchers, snugglers and swimmers. Big, small, smooth, fluffy - the dog world was well represented, and so was the world of warm-hearted pet owners. There were so many wonderful dog photos and personal stories that, frankly, the judges struggled to narrow this down to…

You can vote to help send these GSMST students' project into outer space.
Three students at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology hope their project is out of this world... Literally. Seniors Shawn Albert of Snellville and Aditya Ragunathan of Duluth, along with junior Brian Barr of Dacula entered Lenovo and YouTube's Science Lab Competition. On Wednesday, they received word that they were chosen as one of 60 finalists worldwide. The competition is for students all across the globe. Students between the ages of 14 and 18 had to design a science project to be performed in space on the International Space Station and streamed live on YouTube. The trio chose to focus on diabetes and insulin. “Our goal with this experiment is to see how microgravity and other factors in space affect insulin …

Look who we found while walking in Downtown Lawrenceville!
While strolling through Honest Alley on a way to a story, I ran into this six foot tall, huge, yellow bird. I thought this Big Bird may have been lost and took out my handy GPS to try to tell him how to get to Sesame Street. Turns out it's one of the entries in the Post-It Note Wars going on in town. Big Bird's made his nest in the window of Rock Paper Scissors. For more information and details on how you can enter the Post-It Note Wars, see the event's page on Facebook.
