Two companies get the green light to proceed with Jackson Street Park design and development.
November 14, 2011: City Council Business Meeting Summary X. Council Business A. Old Business Item 1. Request Approval of Tunnel Spangler Jackson Street Park Contract – City Attorney Lee Thompson, Jr. asked council to approve a contract with Tunnel Spangler in the amount of $90,884.00 for design work, construction documents and review for the Jackson Street Park. This project proposal was approved by the council in its October Work Session with instructions to put proposal into an official contract for a vote. It was noted by Mr. Thompson that if the project exceeds the requested amount that additional expenditures will be brought back before the council for approval. September 21, 2011: City Council Work Session Item 4: Audit Report---Bret Norman an Audit Manager with Moore Stephens and Tiller, LLC (MST) gave the council a revised draft copy of the city’s Audit Report. From the initial draft, the city asked MST to revise or extend “a few of the procedures”, to check the wording of specific ordinances inserted into the agreed upon Procedures Report, and to sort through some previously approved city council transactions that were “mistakenly overlooked”. After receiving the initial Audit Report the council instructed the firm to make changes, Norman presented those changes. Councilman Tony Powell blasted former Mayor Rex Millsaps' attempts to interfere with the hiring of a city manager. Council approved 2nd Read of Sign Ordinance, drastically reduced downtown parking space fees paid by business owners and more.
Before convening the City Council June Business Meeting, Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson did something she said she has wanted to do since taking office. She wanted to recognize and honor Lawrenceville veterans that served this country in World War II and in the Korean War. On Monday evening the mayor and city council members did just that. In recognizing the importance of this day in the country’s history, Mayor Johnson said, “On June 6, 1944 was the battle of D-Day. We so often do not express our gratitude to these men and women. It really came home to me when I was talking to some of these service men and women; and one of them stated that since being discharged only two people have said thank you. It was the most moving city meeting I've ever been a part of. I'm proud of Judy for putting it together and giving those men and women the respect they deserve!   more ›
