Gwinnett Politicians Take Stand on Segregated Proms

Groups from both sides of the aisle, including Lawrenceville State Rep. Buzz Brockway and former Snellville city councilman Melvin Everson, have lauded the efforts of four girls to end the practice of segregated proms in Rochelle, Ga.

Former Snellville council member and the Republican executive director of the Georgia Commission of Equal Opportunity Melvin Everson took a stance on the lack of an integrated prom at Wilcox County High School in Rochelle, Ga.  It all started when four girls-- Stephanie Sinnot, Mareshia Rucker, Quanesha Wallace, and Keela Bloodworth-- took a stand against their school's practice of having two proms - one for white kids and one for non-whites.  The girls, two black and two white, would not have been able to attend prom together. "We live in rural south Georgia, where not too many things change," the girls wrote on a Facebook page dedicated to an integrated prom. "Well, as a group of adamant high school seniors, we want to make a difference …

Will Georgia's Immigration Law Affect Tourism?

Some say HB 87, Georgia's immigration law, could lead to a loss in revenue from tourism if large conventions decide to boycott the bill by not coming to Georgia. Others say the effects are exaggerated.

Georgia's controversial immigration law, HB 87, went into effect Friday. In addition to the bill's effects on the economy, education, and more, the law could affect tourism in Georgia, especially large conventions. The Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau, which manages the Gwinnett Center and Arena, supported a resolution by the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau saying that the bill could cause a loss in revenues from conventions and tourism. “We don't support it,” said Lisa Anders, deputy director of the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau, of the immigration law. “It has the potential to give Atlanta an unwelcoming image for conventions and meetings.” But so far, Atlanta has not lost any conventions, and she hopes Gwinnett …
