The Duluth High grad and Atlanta All-Star will begin his comeback on May 2 at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Ga.
Brian McCann is coming home to get ready for his 2013 baseball season. The veteran Atlanta Braves catcher, a Duluth High grad, will begin a rehab assignment with the Gwinnett Braves beginning Thursday, May 2, the G-Braves announced Wednesday (May 1). McCann, 29, underwent shoulder surgery last October, and already has played in some rehab games with the Class A Rome Braves in 2013. He has a .279 career batting average with 156 career homers with Atlanta. It's the third time that McCann has done a rehab stint with Gwinnett, the others being in 2009 (eye infection) and 2011 (left oblique). Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann will again hold his celebrity softball event for charity at Coolray Field on Saturday, November 3. The fourth Brian McCann Rally Celebrity Softball Game will be at the Lawrenceville park, home of the Gwinnett Braves, beginning at 12:35 p.m. Gates will open at 11 a.m. The Chipper Jones Family Foundation also is presenting the event. For the second straight game, the Gwinnett Braves' starting pitcher was hit hard in a loss. Thursday, it was star prospect Julio Teheran (3-2). Host Buffalo scored four runs in the first two innings for a 4-2 victory. Teheran allowed three walks and two hits in the first. A two-run single by Buffalo in the third gave them a 4-2 lead that held up the rest of the way. Teheran allowed four runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings, walking five. Jair Jurrjens, once one of the brightest pitching stars with the Atlanta Braves, will begin his comeback Sunday when he pitches for the Gwinnett Braves in Toledo. Jurrjens, 26, won 27 games in 2008-09, his first two seasons with the Atlanta Braves. The Atlanta Braves announced they are optioning pitcher Jair Jurrjens to the Gwinnett Braves. The news came shortly after Jurrjens pitched three-plus innings in a 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. During his time on the mound Monday evening, Jurrjens allowed five runs. Hudson allowed an unearned run in five innings last Wednesday in a rehab start for the G-Braves. Gwinnett will come home having lost two straight to Charlotte. The Knights took a 2-0 victory Sunday in Fort Mill, S.C. In the past two games, G-Braves batters have managed just seven hits. The Gwinnett Braves begin a road series Friday on a roll, having just completed a 7-1 homestand. The G-Braves beat Norfolk, 9-2, Thursday to complete a four-game sweep of the Tides. On Thursday, Jordan Parraz went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI and Ernesto Mejia went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI. Gwinnett jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and never trailed. Right-hander Eric Junge threw six scoreless innings to earn the win. Gwinnett takes on Charlotte on Friday night.

The Baseball Hall of Famer was spotted at the stadium before the game in Lawrenceville, Ga. Thursday evening.
Legendary Atlanta Brave and Baseball Hall of Famer Phil Niekro was seen at Coolray Field. Niekro stopped to take a picture with the Gwinnett Braves General Manager, North Johnson. Knucksie returned to the mound to throw out the first pitch at the G-Braves home opener.
