Gwinnett County Extends Toilet Rebate Program

The Board of Commissioners agreed to extend the successful program to multi-family homes in the coming year.

Gwinnett County hopes to keep some money and unnecessary amounts of water from going down the drain. The Board of Commissioners agreed to extend their toilet rebate program. Starting in 2012, the successful program will be open to multi-family units.  The rebate program is offered in conjunction with the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District. Homeowners will get rebates of up to $100 to replace up to two original toilets in homes built before 1993. Many older toilets use as much as eight gallons of water per flush while newer ones can use just 1.28 gallons. “The rebates have already helped Gwinnett County homeowners replace close to 9,500 inefficient toilets, which saves more than 600,000 gallons of water a day," said acting …

Five Forks Library to Undergo Upgrades

The library will be closed to the public during phase one of the renovations.

The Five Forks Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library will soon be getting an upgrade. The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved a $1.06 million construction contract for improvements Tuesday. The planned changes will help control operating costs and improve efficiency. The needed improvements were first identified in 2007. They include updating the ighting, mechanical equipment, temperature control and lowering overall energy use. The library will also get new carpet, finishes and a fresh coat of paint. Renovations are expected to take seven months to complete. They will take place in two phases beginning in the early winter. Public Hearing on Gwinnett Budget

The public will get a chance to speak on the planned 2012 Gwinnett County budget on Tuesday at headquarters in Lawrenceville. Commissioners will hold the public hearingin the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville at 5:30 p.m. Commissioners also will hold a regular business meeting Tuesday at 2 p.m. The proposed budget is $1.3 billion for 2012, about 12.4 percent smaller than the current spending blueprint. This includes about $5 million in reserve funds, but county officials say they intend to make budget cuts during the year to prevent those funds from actually being used. Gwinnett Citizens Airport Panel Complete

The 11-member citizens panel that will review Gwinnett County's Briscoe Field privatization process is now complete. District 1 Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, made her choices Tuesday, naming Terry Britt and Nickie Summers. Other commissioners had made their choices earlier in October, when the board also authorized consultants IMG to begin assisting the county with the RFP process for the airport. "Neither one of them have a dog in the fight other than to do what's best for Gwinnett County," Lasseter said of her appointees. No meeting date has been set by the panel, and the county is not sure when it formally will issue RFPs. Report: Clear Goal Needed for Briscoe

Question and answer session with airport consultants scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners will meet with airport consultants Infrastructure Management Group Inc. (IMG) on Tuesday, Sept. 20, to discuss the results of a study commissioned by Gwinnett County regarding the future of Briscoe Field. In a report released last month (see pdf), IMG made several recommendations to the county: The IMG report also noted several other critical issues including: The question and answer session will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners conference room, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. Commissioners Vote to Reduce Millage Rate

Reduction of rate by .23 mills gives Gwinnett County residents a tax break.

Gwinnett County property owners got a tax break, albeit a small one, Monday when commissioners voted to reduce the millage rate. “The rate was lowered from 13.25 mils to 13.02 mils,” said Joe Sorenson, communications director for Gwinnett County. “The .23 mil reduction was in the bond levy, which fell from .47 mils to .24 mils.” The vote was taken at a special called meeting of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners. Sorenson said the reduced millage rate would mean an annual saving of about $15.60 for the typical homeowner. He said the drop was due to the retirement of debt. Nash and Mayors Talk About Service Delivery Dispute

A new approach is hoped for with a new commission chair.

County Commission Chair Charlotte Nash and representatives of most of the Gwinnett cities met for the first time Wednesday with the subject of the long-standing Service Delivery Strategy dispute on the table. Wednesday’s Gwinnett Municipal Association meeting went into executive session for the talk because the subject is under litigation. “It was a very positive talk,” said Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, who has been at the head of negotiations over the dispute, which has left the county and cities unable to renew state contracts since the year began. “There was progress made last night,” Johnson said on Thursday. “Chairman Nash is exhibiting a common sense approach to solving the service delivery conflicts,” said Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris…

Kevin Kenerly Indictment Overturned

The Georgia Court of Appeals made the ruling Thursday.

The Georgia Court of Appeals overturned indictment charges against former Gwinnett County Commissioner Kevin Kenerly Thursday.  The court ruled that the special purpose grand jury that indicted Kenerly last October was not legally authorized to do so. Those charges included one count of bribery and two counts of failing to disclose a financial interest. The indictments claimed Kenerly failed to disclose a partnership with a developer who was seeking county rezoning of two properties at the time and was ultimately approved. Kenerly was also accused of accepting or agreeing to accept a total of $1 million in bribes for setting up agreements for the county commission to buy real estate. Gwinnett County Police Headquarters to Undergo Renovations

The Board of Commissioners approved the project during Tuesday's meeting.

The Gwinnett County Police Department headquarters will soon get a much needed facelift. The Board of Commissioners approved the project during Tuesday's meeting. The renovations will cost just under $3.5 million and contracted out to the lowest bidder, Cooper and Company General Contractors. The money for the construction will come from the 2005 and 2009 SPLOST. The 67,000 square foot GCPD Headquarters on Hi-Hope Rd was built in 1978. According to Gwinnett County spokesperson Heather Sawyer, the work will begin in July and should take about a year to complete.

Nash Sworn in as Chair of Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners

Charlotte Nash officially took the oath of office Monday afternoon.

A packed auditorium at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center cheered and applauded loudly as Charlotte Nash was officially sworn is as the new Chairman of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Monday afternoon. The Dacula native easily beat out three opponents in the March 15th Special Election. Nash garnered 56 percent of the votes. Nash will complete the unexpired term of former Chairman Charles Bannister.
