Georgia's Tax-Free Holiday Returns

On Friday and Saturday Aug. 10th and 11th, there will be no sales tax on many things kids will need as they start the school year.

Although school will already be back in session, parents and teachers can will get a break on back to school needs from the State of Georgia. The state is bringing back its Tax-Free Holiday. On Friday and Saturday Aug. 10th and 11th, shoppers will be exempt from paying taxes on everything from school clothes to notebooks to notebook computers. Most clothing and footwear with a sales price under $100 is exempt. Computers, tablets, printers and other technology and accessories under $1,000 will avoid state sales tax. Gwinnett Online Campus Expands to Middle Schoolers

The charter school, which opened last year as a high school, will serve grades six through eight for the 2012-2013 school year.

The Gwinnett County Online Campus will expand its curriculum to the middle school level this fall, according to a press release. The charter school, which opened in Norcross last year as a high school under Gwinnett County Public Schools, will have 78 students enrolled in grades six through eight this August. The campus will have a total of 236 students for the 2012-2013 school year. Through its unique learning experience and scheduling flexibility, Gwinnett Online Campus offers a combination of online and face-to-face on-campus learning. GCPS Adding More Healthy Options to School Lunches

Prices for lunch and breakfast at Gwinnett County schools will stay the same when kids return to classes Aug. 6.

Following the popularity of healthy additions last year, Gwinnett County Public Schools will be adding more options that pack a better nutritional punch. New on the lunch lines at schools throughout the county will be: Below is a breakdown of the 21,607,762 student lunches and 10,671,375 student breakfasts served in the 2011-2012 school year: The price for meals will remain the same as the last school year. Elementary school students will pay $2.00 for lunch and middle and high school students will pay $2.25. Reduced lunch is $0.40. Student breakfast is $1.25 and reduced breakfast is $0.30.

Gwinnett School Board Meets Monthly, Open to the Public

The five-member board, along with the superintendent, hold public meetings the third Thursday of each month.

Gwinnett County's Board of Education is made up of five members who, along with the superintendent, hold monthly meetings. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Board room at the Gwinnett County's headquarters, located at 437 Old Peachtree Road in Suwanee. All meetings, with the exception of executive sessions, are open to the public. The agendas are prepared in advance and are available online at noon on the Monday the week of the meeting. Citizens, staff and board members may suggest items for the agenda. Citizens are encouraged to attend and anyone wishing to speak at the meeting should contact the Superintendent's Office in writing by noon on the Monday prior to the Board meeting. Gwinnett Schools Go Back Aug. 6 - What You Need to Know

Officials give details on preparations for returning and new students to Gwinnett County Public Schools for the upcoming 2012/2013 school year.

As the summer vacation winds down, Gwinnett County Public School officials are already releasing information to get students prepared for a return to classrooms. According to a press release, the 2012/2013 school year is the first time in more than a decade that no new school facilities will open, although there will be one expansion. Gwinnett County Online campus is adding middle school classes. There are about 265 new students expected for the upcoming school year, bringing the total enrollment to 162,635. In the GSPS system there are 132 facilities, including 77 elementary schools 26 middle schools, 19 high schools and 10 special entities. School Bus Practice Runs Begin July 30

GCPS bus drivers will run their assigned routes through Lawrenceville and Gwinnett County in preparation for the Aug. 6 school start date.

Gwinnett County school buses will start rolling again in just one week. Beginning July 30, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) buses will be on the road as drivers prepare for the Aug. 6 start of school. According to a GCPS press release, drivers will run their assigned routes during actual drive times from Tuesday, July 31, through Friday, Aug. 3 with limited practice runs on Thursday. The routes will be run both mornings and afternoons. During the first few days of school, GCPS officials advise parents to have their children at the bus stop approximately 15 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Donations of School Supplies Requested for Those in Need

Several organizations in Gwinnett County are helping supply children of families in need with school supplies.

With back-to-school activities kicking into high gear, there is a call on Gwinnett County residents who can afford it to help those in the community in need. Several agencies are asking for donations of the following school supplies. The following agencies in the county are collecting these supplies and can be contacted to donate items.
