David Augustus Lee II, a student at Archer High School in Lawrenceville, was charged and arrested with possessing a weapon on school grounds at Parkview High School. No one was hurt.
An Archer High School student has been released from jail after being charged with having a handgun present during a school sporting event. David Augustus Lee II of Lawrenceville was arrested March 30 at Parkview High School in Lilburn, where he was attending the fourth annual Big Orange Relays track meet. A witness at Archer High alerted police to the possible presence of a weapon; Lee's arrest followed a search of his vehicle by school officials. Gwinnett County school officials confirm the student is a sophomore at Archer High, and say in cases such as this, that students are out of school pending a disciplinary panel. Thousands of high school students will graduate this May in Gwinnett County. Now, the list is out for the 2013 graduation schedule. See below the list of graduations. First up is Lawrenceville's Phoenix High School on May 20 at 7 p.m. The last school to graduate students is Archer High School at 7 p.m., May 25. After graduating from Archer, Melissa Thomas will attend the University of Georgia in the fall where she plans on majoring in nursing. In the future, Thomas hopes to become a Pediatric Oncology nurse at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She is the daughter of Mike and Sandi Thomas and is an honor student, musician and athlete. The National Honor Society, Beta Club and the Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the volleyball and basketball teams are just a few of her activities. Thomas is the recipient of the Hugh O’Brien Youth leadership Award (HOBY), AP Scholar Award and more. In Gwinnett County, 9,843 students are expected to graduate from the county's 21 public high schools. This year's graduating class, described as the largest ever according to Gwinnett County Public Schools, was also an accomplished according to CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks. “As a community, we can be proud of these students and what they have achieved during their academic careers," Wilbanks said in a released statement. Gwinnett County Public Schools approved three new principals to replace retirees, including a few changes at Lawrenceville schools.
Ken Johnson will be leaving Berkmar High School to become principal of Archer High School, Gwinnett County Public Schools said Thursday as they announced three replacements for retiring principals. Mary Thomas, assistant principal at Arcado Elementary, will lead Pharr Elementary, GCPS said in a press release. Peggy Goodman, principal at Gwin Oaks Elementary, will lead Five Forks Middle School. The appointments were approved Thursday at the district's monthly meeting and are effective June 1. Johnson has been at Berkmar since 1997 and has been principal there since 2004.
