2011 Budget Cut Impact on Gwinnett Public Libraries Uncertain
Gwinnett County Library is uncertain of the impact of 15 percent approved budget cut.
In light of the recent Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved budget for 2011, the Gwinnett County Public Library is not yet certain how they will be impacted by the 15 percent cut. In 2010, the Public Library system received $18.9 million and now faces receiving $2.8 million less for 2011. This will undoubtedly yield significant changes, but it's just too early to tell. Nancy Stanbery-Kellam, executive director of the Public Library, states, "There will be a reduction in service, but in which areas and to what degree is yet to be determined" The public library faced a similar funding crisis last year before county commissioners approved a 21 percent increase in the property tax rate. I always associated public libraries w/ free access to references and computers. Major tools for students and job seeker who spend tons of time in libraries. As they look to make cuts and POSSIBLY reduce hours... they may consider staying open peak usage times to ensure they care still serving as many people as possible. Tough times call for tough decisions.   more ›
