Teacher Tips: Help Revise School Curriculum

Now those who are concerned can share their opinions on the curriculum taught in the classroom.

In previous years, parents and students have asked questions like, “Why is my child learning this?” and students would often comment, “I don’t like this subject? …Is this important?”

Well, now parents and students can make a difference in what is being taught in the classrooms.  Gwinnett County is giving staff, parents and the community opportunities to review and share feedback about the system’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS).  The AKS is aligned with the newly adopted Georgia Common Core Standards for K-12 Language Arts, K-12 Mathematics, and 6-12 Literacy Standards for Science, Social Studies, and Technical Education.

The first phase-in of this curriculum will begin in 2012-13, with K-12 Language Arts and K-10 Mathematics. Gwinnett County Public Schools curriculum directors for these areas worked with teachers to ensure the school system’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum for 2012-13 is aligned to the new CCGPS standards.

Citizens are needed to give opinions on additions, changes or deletions for the current AKS.

On Mar 1, 2012, the suggestions will be reviewed and recommendations will be sent to CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks to be adopted by the School Board.  Comments will be accepted from now through Friday, Dec 9th.
