GGC Additions Help School Plan for Growth

The college recently acquired two pieces of land to help the campus expand.

recently acquired two pieces of property to help the school expand and eventually accommodate more students and staff. The University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted to accept both properties at this month's meeting.

One of the properties an old car dealership sitting opposite GGC on Highway 316. It sits on 7.7 acres and the building itself is more than 38,000 square feet. Last year, the Georgia Department of Transportation acquired the property in advance of construction of a . GDOT no longer needed the land and transferred it to GGC.

“GGC is very appreciative of the DOT’s consideration of the college’s need for additional property, and for the GGC Foundation’s visionary and strategic approach to providing the college with the ability to make better use of existing facilities,” said Gordon Harrison, president of the GGC Foundation in a release. “Collaborations like these continue to be key to GGC’s success.”

The property has been appraised at $965,000. The college is considering using it for academic purposes. The current building, which once housed cars and mechanics' bays, could also serve a variety of uses.

The second space is already being used by the college. Building D is currently owned by the GGC Foundation and they have donated part of that building to the school. The space includes 45,930-square-foot space originally designed as a warehouse as well as parking spaces. The total value of this gift is $1.7 million.

“We are making creative use of existing resources as we plan for accommodating the college’s continued, dramatic growth,” said Eddie Beauchamp, vice president for Facilities and Operations, in a release. “Legally, GGC can only modify facilities that it owns. Now that the foundation has given GGC the former warehouse space, we can begin renovating this area as critically needed flex space.”

GGC plans to use the space in Building D as faculty office space for now, with plans to turn them into classrooms in the future.
