GCPS Named Most Outstanding District
The GCPS system was recently recognized at the 2011 PACE Award ceremony in Atlanta.
The Gwinnett County Public School System has been named as the “Most Outstanding School District” in the Clean Air Campaign’s 2011 PACE Awards. The PACE Awards program offers recognition for the best commute option programs in Georgia. Awards are given in several different categories including employers, property managers, schools and individuals who are working to advance the promise of cleaner air and less traffic.
The PACE Award for Clean Air Schools District of the Year was presented to the Gwinnett County School System at a ceremony on August 24 at the Georgia-Pacific Auditorium in downtown Atlanta. This award is in place to recognize exemplary parent volunteers, outstanding schools or school districts who achieve success through the Clean Air Schools program.
The School Champion recognized at the ceremony was Deputy Brian Reents of General Ray Davis Middle School in Rockdale County. The Marlin M. Gottschalk Environmental Leadership Award went to Evansdale Elementary School in DeKalb County and the Most Outstanding School District Award was presented to our own Gwinnett County Public Schools.

The Gwinnett County Public Schools joined the Clean Air Schools program in 2007 and just last year nearly 50 percent of all the schools in the county implemented a program on school grounds to improve air quality. The schools system’s partnership with Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful in addition to excellent participation from teachers and students allowed the school district to decrease idling by nearly 50 percent. This was the highest average of decline by any school system during the 2010-2011 school year.
