Archer High School Offers 'Heart Screens for Teens'

Sudden Cardiac Death can happen in an instant and history has shown that athletes from all levels die each year from SCD.

Archer High School in Lawrenceville will be offering “Heart Screens for Teens” on Saturday, March 10. The Archer High School PTSA has recently partnered with “Heart Screens for Teens” and will be offering screenings for a discounted rate of $65 payable by cash or check. Screenings typically cost anywhere from $900 to $1500.

Screenings are performed using ultrasound technology and the exam is simple, safe and requires no preparation. A typical screening takes around ten minutes per athlete. Students wishing to receive a screen should make an appointment by contacting Mary Jackson at 678-458-5502 or via email.

Sudden Cardiac Death can happen in an instant and history has shown that athletes from all levels of sport die each year from SCD. According to “Heart Screens for Teens” SCD affects 1 in 500 people, of all ages, but typically manifests before the age of 20. SCD often strikes with no warnings or symptoms in otherwise healthy young adults. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of SCD in teens and is 100 percent detectable.
