Who Won in the Norcross City Council Election?

The results are in for who won the two city council seats in the 2012 local race between candidates Arlene Beckles, Keith Shewbert, David McLeroy and Ross Kaul.

Updated, 10:40 p.m.

After two months of campaigning, a candidates debate forum and numerous meet-and-greets with locals, the four candidates in the 2012 Norcross City Council election can finally take a breather: The results were announced around 9:20 p.m. election night, and the winners are incumbent David McLeroy and former Councilman Keith Shewbert.

"I am very happy and glad that we had such a huge turnout," said Shewbert, who had served one term from 2006 to 2008. "We're looking forward to listening to the citizens and leaning toward the way they want to go in the city."

"I'm relieved," said McLeroy, who's served on the council for five terms. "I'm glad the citizens have the confidence in me after 10 years, and that comforts me that they trust me for another two years. It feels good; it feels like I'm doing something right."

Shewbert's opponent was incumbent Ross Kaul, who had served on the council for two terms, and McLeroy was up against Arlene Beckles, a heavily involved citizen who's volunteered for Norcross organizations such as the Norcross Police Department Foundation and Safe Routes to School.

Mayor Pro Tem Andrew Hixson ran unopposed and will be serving his third term come January.

Out of 879 votes casted, 465 of the votes went to winner Shewbert and 386 went to opponent Kaul, according to Norcross City Clerk Susan Wuerzner. In the other race, McLeroy received 538 votes while opponent Beckles had 323 votes.

"As a first-time candidate, I am fortunate to receive the support of so many of my Norcross neighbors," said Beckles after the election results were announced. "Thanks for believing in my ability to be an advocate for you. Congratulations to David McLeroy. I look forward to continuing to work with him to move Norcross forward."
