Sidewalks Approved for Stretch of Club Drive

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners on Friday approved a project for the Department of Transportation to install sidewalks on Club Drive from Pleasant Hill to the . This is an area popular for pedestrians, especially children and families walking on the busy road to play at the park. 

In April, 9 year old . According to Gwinnett County Police, Sanders attempted to cross Club Drive and stepped into the path of the driver who did not stop to offer help. Sanders and her family reportedly were going to the Club Drive Park. That 16 year old driver was arrested and charged with hit and run with serious injury or death, first degree vehicular homicide, false report of a crime, tampering with evidence, and violation of driver’s license restrictions. Sanders died on the scene.

Residents in the neighborhood had expressed concern to BOC Chair Charlotte Nash following the fatal accident. In 2008, a 25 year old Norcross man was also struck and killed while attempting to cross Club Drive.

The project is slated to begin next year. The construction will also include curb and gutter installation, roadside shoulder and drainage improvements.

The BOC also approved new sidewalks, curb and gutter, lighting, seating, signage and landscaping for a stretch of road on Pleasant Hill Road from Satellite Boulevard to I-85.

“These board actions are an incremental step required for federally funded projects. We are grateful for the opportunity to use these funds to continue to improve pedestrian safety in Gwinnett County,” said Gwinnett DOT Director Brian Allen in a release.
