Several Local State Candidates Face Primary Challenges

Although some state legislators can sit out the primary elections, there are others in the local districts who won't have it so easy.

With qualifying over, and the Memorial Day weekend just a pleasant memory, several candidates at the state level will now have to get down to the business of campaigning. Not everyone for the July 31 Primary election.

In the Georgia House of Representatives, newly-elected District 107 Rep. , has a Republican challenger for the newly redrawn District 114. , a contractor. Upton gives a Loganville box number in his qualifying documentation. Nobody qualified on the Democratic side, so the winner on July 31 will represent District 114 when the new term begins in January.

In the open seat for District 105, there are two Republican and two Democratic candidates hoping to take the first term. On the Republican side, retired school counselor Joyce Chandler, 71, from Lawrenceville, will take on , a business owner from Grayson. The winner will face the winner of the Democratic challenge in November. In that race, Renita Hamilton, 37, a wedding and event planner from Lawrenceville, will face Rashid Malik, 52, an educator, also from Lawrenceville. Hamilton previously ran for Lawrenceville City Council in 2011.

The newly-drawn District 93 now touches on the outskirts of unincorporated Loganville. In that race, incumbent Democratic Rep. Dar’shun N. Kendrick, 29, an attorney from Lithonia, faces two Democrats in the July 31 Primary. Qualifying to challenge Kendrick are Dexter Dawston, 40, a truck driver from Snellville and Glen Williams, a small business owner, also from Snellville. The sucessful candidate in July, or in a runoff if one is necessary, will face the lone Republican to qualify, Christine β€œTina” Hoffer, a registered nurse from Snellville.

In the state Senate, Incumbent of Snellville, is facing a two-pronged Republican challenge in the Primary from Travis Bowden, 30, a businessman from Snellville and Steve Ramey, 62, a marketer from Lilburn. The winner in that race will face the only Democrat to qualify, Scott Drake, 50, an attorney from Lawrenceville.
