Gwinnett Library System To Get New Online Catalog

Enhanced search features are among the promised updates.

Attention, users of the Gwinnett County Public Library system: An upgrade to the catalog system is coming.

Effective Jan. 15, the system will launch Polaris, a new customer-friendly online catalog. It promises many new features and enhanced search, according to information that already is online on the library system website.

Library users will still be able to use their existing cards, the system says. Also, users' reading history will be available.

According to the website:

  • in the current catalog, if you type in “John Gresham” as an author keyword search, you will receive no results and no suggestions.  In Polaris, the name “John Gresham” results in the response “Did you mean John Grisham?”
  • in searching for the novel "Gone With the Wind" in the current catalog, the novel shows up in 22nd place on the results list. Add the Fiction Only limiter, and the novel comes up in sixth place.  In Polaris, the novel should appear at or near the top of the list, even in a general keyword search.
  • text message options will be available for checkout receipts, hold notifications, and catalog entries.
Also, the attached video discusses the new system.
