The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners adopted a $1.5 billion budget for fiscal year 2014 Tuesday afternoon.

Included in the $1.027 billion operating budget, a three percent raise for county employees, including police officers and firefighters. This will be the first time in five years employees will receive an increase in pay.

The Commissioners will also add two new emergency medical services units in the county. This will create three new positions and fill 15 left vacant during budget cuts in previous years.

More new jobs are included in the new budget as well. The county will fund five new positions-- three in Juvenile Court and two in the District Attorney’s Office.

The budget will also absorb an increase in health care costs of almost 10 percent.

The $486 million capital budget will fund projects from the 2014 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. Collection of the 2014 SPLOST begins on April 1.

You can see the entire budget on the Gwinnett County website.

Raise? What is this? Well good for our government employees, I wish the same was true about the private sector. So we are paying our government more and creating new programs to suppress and limit the rightsof all Gwinnettians. The pay for government employees should be directly tied to the pay of the private sector workers for incentive to actually make policy that helps instead of hurt the people paying for these tyrants! This didn't work in Rome, and cannot be sustained here. When are the people going to wake up and actually do a little research before they vote for these clowns and the wasteful programs that they put into place, aka SPLOST.

DonnyO - if you are so unhappy about Gwinnett Co - MOVE. It is about time the police and fire fighters get a raise. We have been loosing a number of these employees to other counties who are paying better/better benefits. We definitely need further emergency provisions in this county. I'm glad you have finally made provisions for all these services.

Deanna, first of all I have been living here my whole life and don't plan to move anytime soon. It's just the fact that I see out rights being taken away a little at a time for years and years by power hungry buracrats. Secondly a should have made clear my position on firefighters abd policemen. If your occupation makes you put your life on the line, then I think you should be paid like a rock star. I was mainly referring to county employees whose biggest risk is a paper cut while pushing there pencils around while trying to figure out how to pad there pockets and come up with fascistic rules to to fulfill there power appetite.

How about all the county school workers? We deserve raises too! I'm a bus driver/county employee and drive special needs children. Have been driving for years both special needs and regular ed children but recently here in Georgia. We get paid salary as do most county employees, the downside, our checks are tiny! A pay raise would help along with years put in bump. Would be nice but hey, a raise in any form is a plus! Us bus drivers transport the most precious cargo, our children! We lose drivers all the time because the pay isnt worth the headaches, traffic jams, accidents, getting cut off and having to slam on brakes to miss the person who cut us off in the first place just to race to a RED light! It's a stressful job but someone has to do it. We brave soles are up and running before you even have time to hit the snooze button... we all deserve a raise! Over the past year, starting pay has decreased and job postions lost all in the transportation dept. Most people over look us drivers. We matter too.. without us you would have to drive your own kids to school! I opt for SCHOOL BUS DRIVER PAY INCREASES!!
