Forsyth County Parking Deck Closing Soon

Forsyth County will permanently close the parking deck in downtown Cumming on Dec. 28.

The parking deck located at the intersection of East Main Street and Mason Street in downtown Cumming will close at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28. If you use the parking deck make sure your vehicle is removed by that time.

The parking deck is scheduled for demolition to allow for construction of a new courthouse approved by voters in Nov. 2011 as part of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII program.

"The demolition is expected to begin in mid-January, with the specific date to be determined as we complete the preparation that must be done in advance of the demolition," wrote Jodi Gardner, spokesperson for the county, in an e-mail to Cumming Patch.

Upon closure of the parking deck, jurors and others doing business at the Forsyth County Courthouse should use the parking lot at the southwest corner of Maple Street and Castleberry Road.

“Throughout this project, there will certainly be a lot of activity and changes taking place in downtown Cumming, starting with the demolition of the structures currently on the site of the new courthouse,” said County Manager Doug Derrer. “Forsyth County appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding during this project.”

So they built it,then they closed it for repairs after it was about a year old. Spent Millions of extra dollars to make changes to it so it could be used. Now that it is fixed lets tear it down. Oh and by the way they will have to build a new one some where else to replace it.

How did I miss all this?! And what about the old court house? What happens with it? Do we really need this many administration buildings? Parking is bad enough already! Oh well... guess I missed that one.

And that deck is only - what - 12-15 years old? Our tax dollars paid for it the first time, paid for repairs, paid for "upgrades", will pay for demolition, and then pay for the new Courthouse. How many millions more will go into that piece of land? But wait, it's ok, it's "Splost" money. That makes it all better.

Yea.. they're getting rid of the parking deck, building a NEW courthouse but moving it back on the property so ppl coming N on Veterans can have a better VIEW of the Administration building..Now they have to find a different place for a parking deck (not included in budget of court house) .. Go figure our commissioners picked the most expensive to build that does address all our needs together for LOOKS!!!!
