The Atlanta Journal-Constitution originally reported that a lawsuit was filed in Gwinnett County earlier this month accusing Mike Berlon -- head of Georgia's Democratic Party since 2011 -- of failing to distribute nearly $1 million from a trust he set up for a friend.

Raymond Hines is that friend, who said he asked Berlon to start the trust in 2003. Berlon, a Lawrenceville area attorney, told the AJC that the lawsuit is simply a case of miscommunication.

Other questions surround funds reported on-hand for the state Democratic Party, and child support owed by one of Berlon's clients.

Berlon is the immediate past president of the Georgia Association of Democratic County Chairs, and he is the longest-serving Democratic Party chairman in Gwinnett County.
