Bring One for the Chipper

Rather than dragging your old Christmas tree to the curb, recycle it and give it a second life.

Now that Christmas has come and passed, what to do with that old tree? Rather than just dragging the tired tree to the curb, why not give it a second life?  

Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful is asking you to bring your old tannenbaums to their 25th annual "Bring One for the Chipper" tree recycling campaign.

From now until Jan. 15, 2011, Gwinnett County residents can take their undecorated Christmas trees to one of several locations for recycling. In Lawrenceville, they are:

  • Fire Station 9, 1900 Five Forks-Trickum Rd., 30044
  • Fire Station 15, 275 S. Perry St., 30046
  • Fire Station 20, 1801 Cruse Rd., 30044
  • Fire Station 25, 3575 Lawrenceville Hwy., 30044

On Jan. 22nd the collected trees will be taken to , where they will be shredded. Much of the mulch will then be used to help keep Gwinnett County Parks beautiful.

Since 1984, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful estimates it have kept more than one million trees from entering landfills. The organization says one Christmas tree weighs 20 pounds and takes up almost as much space in a landfill as a washing machine.

For the past five years, Gwinnett County has recovered the most trees in all of Georgia, with residents recycling one in three trees each year.
