Woman Killed Crossing Pike Street

The woman was trying to cross the road on her way to work at Gwinnett Medical Center early Thursday morning.

A woman was struck and killed as she tried to cross a busy Lawrenceville road early Thursday morning.

Lawrenceville Police say Sheila Smith, 58, of Lawrenceville, was trying to cross SR 120 at about 5:30am. She was walking in front of the QuickTrip at 741 W. Pike Street when she was hit by a blue Hyundai Elantra.

"Smith appeared to be leaving the QuikTrip on her way to work at Gwinnett Medical Center," said Sgt. Chris Ralston in a release.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police do not believe alcohol is a factor in this tragic accident as they continue the investigation. Ralston says no charges against the driver have been filed.
