Gwinnett fire and police investigators are trying to piece together what led to a woman’s death Saturday evening after an apparent room fire at a Norcross residence.

Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said firefighters answered a medical call of a person down at a home on Heritage Valley Road around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 31.

A family member found the woman unconscious and unresponsive in a room where there had been a fire earlier, Rutledge said. The fire was contained to the room.

The identity of the woman was not released Saturday night.

“At this time Gwinnett Fire and Police Investigators are working together to determine the exact cause of the fire and the manner of death,” Rutledge said in an emailed release Saturday night. “The woman's body will be released to the Medical Examiners Office.”

This address is in unincorporated Gwinnett Cty and is really closer to Lilburn, even though it has a "Norcross zip code"? It is not in or closes to the norcross city limits.

Does anyone find it odd that the son would drive 17 hours instead of calling local PD for wellness check? Time is of the essence when you believe someone may be in danger.
