Police: Man Killed in Officer Involved Shooting Was Unarmed

A police investigation shows Robert Coleman physically attacked one of the officers who fired shots.

New details in this weekend's officer involved shooting are emerging.

Investigators now say the suspect who was killed was not armed at the time of the shooting. Police identified him as Robert Coleman, 30, of Flowery Branch. They say the knife used in the stabbing at 3668 Willow Wood Way was found in that home. Coleman was shot while officers searched a home at 3849 Smokemist Trace, three blocks away.

Coleman reportedly attacked one of the officers searching the second home, knocking him to the ground.

"The primary officer fired shots at Coleman, fearing for his life," said Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith in a release. "The secondary officer also fired shots at Coleman, fearing for the life of the primary officer."

The first officer was shot in the leg. His injury is being considered "friendly fire," although it is still unclear who's gun fired the bullet.

Both officers were placed on administrative leave.

why is it that if a citizen kills an unarmed man "home invasion, robbery, any confrontation" that person is arrested/ investigated and possibly charged. But if an officer kills an unarmed man, he is "a hero" that "feared for his life" police are WAAAAY too trigger happy these days. if you fear for your life every effing day, maybe this job isnt for you. nerves of steel and RESTRAINT, not sissy girl nerves, and rambo trigger control.

in certain situations restraint won't allow you to make it back home

Funny how only officers get the oppurtunity to act in those situations. And in the situation of an unarmed man? is that justified? really justified, this officer was sooooo scared for his life he took someone elses, why was he scared? not of any weapons obviously, so why kill him frank? You cop buddies are proving to the public EVERY DAY they are willing to take your life for nothing. Over their "fears" if you cant handle fear then leave this job cowards

Or, a good rule of thumb is not to attack police officers if you don't want to be shot. I'm fine with that.

Ok, so in the instance of mental defect we should just put them down? I like your mental health plan, but i dont think its very humane. Someone has a psychotic break, or schizophrenic episode, depressed/suicidal episode. DO NOT CALL THE POLICE because they will, and the news has proved it, Kill that person before thinking about his protection over their own, even though its their sworn duty. As for attacking an officer, it is legal if they are in your home without a warrant. And NO CITIZEN SHOULD BE KILLED IN THEIR OWN HOME, specifically when they are just SUSPECTED of a crime.

If you, as a trained, armed, and with back up, fear for your life because an unarmed human confronts you. YOU DONT DESERVE THAT BADGE OR GUN. You are sworn to lay your life on the line for the citizens, not vice verse. YOU volunteered for the job, no one made you, YOU assume the risk of something bad happening too you in that line of work. DONT just start killing people because YOU BELIEVE that COULD have been a threat. If you fear for your life, then call swat, or get more officers, dont just take someones life.
Brett January 13, 2014 at 06:04 PM
That all sounds real good strange - but unfortunately that's now how it works. People don't typically announce if they're armed or not. I didn't see anything about this person having a "mental defect" (but I wouldn't doubt it). Did you add that in to bolster your argument? Or was that the case here? I still say a good rule of thumb if you don't want to be shot is not to attack police officers (or anyone else for that matter).

you are right he might not have had a mental defect, but there has been two mentall defective people killed in the past 2 months by police. One boy armed with a bb gun, and now this man for texting his daughter. http://www.aol.com/article/2014/01/14/man-fatally-shot-at-movie-theater-after-texting-his-daughter/20807552/?icid=maing-grid7|netscape|dl1|sec1_lnk2%26pLid%3D430156 What im saying is, you cant be judge, jury, and executioner. It isnt your job to kill people as an officer its your job to serve and protect, even if they are suspected of MURDER. Police officers are too agressive, and all too willing to take a life is what im saying. If you do 1 quick google search you will see that the death rate of officers is waaaaaaaay down, while the killing rate of officers is waaaaaay up. most the people officers have killed in recent months have either been unarmed, or mental disabled. many times within SECONDS of arriving on the scene. SECONDS then boom your 18 year old is dead.

so, the officer needs to be shot before making a decision?
Brett January 14, 2014 at 08:22 PM
"If you do 1 quick google search you will see that the death rate of officers is waaaaaaaay down, while the killing rate of officers is waaaaaay up." Hmmm… maybe there's a correlation? No one is in favor of the police killing unarmed citizens. But those cops are someone's children too and they have to deal with the worst of us every day. If an unarmed person is killed while attacking a policeman a mistake was made on the officer's part. But I'll take that mistake over the one where the officer is killed any day. If you don't want to be shot - don't attack the police (or anyone else for that matter).

http://jimfishertruecrime.blogspot.com/2012/01/police-involved-shootings-2011-annual.html the officer shouldnt shoot first ask later is what im saying. he was unarmed, 2 TRAINED, AND ARMED police officers should be able to subdue, 1 unarmed man. also if an officer enters my house without a warrent, you better bet im going to attack him. That badge doesnt make you any less criminal. Also officers are DOING A JOB. that job isnt to kill people but protect them. AND PUT THEIR LIFE ON THE LINE. its in the effing job description, if you fear for your life every time you are on the beat, you dont deserve that badge or gun.

the officers could have just as easily asscessed the situation, made the call that there is a potential danger inside, and called for back up, or swat to eater the house. Instead they went in ready to kill. with no other options in mind but kill. If you have 5 weapons "asp, mace, gun, tazer, and knife" and fear for you life from an unarmed man, YOU ARE A COWARD
Brett January 15, 2014 at 09:37 PM
Strange - I think you've been watching too many movies. There's no evidence this policeman went in with "no other options in mind but to kill" and saying he did doesn't make it true in any way whatsoever. If the cop was attacked as claimed he has every right to defend himself. I'll take a dead cop attacker over a dead cop any day. To each his own.
