One Suspect Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting Near Apartment Complex

One person was killed by police and an officer was sent to the hospital after a Wednesday morning foot chase and shooting near Lawrenceville.

The incident happened around 1 a.m. at the Lake Sweetwater Apartments on Sweetwater Road, according to a Gwinnett Police spokesman.

Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith said officers arrived at the apartments to check out a vehicle with three “suspicious people” inside — two men and one woman.

When police located the vehicle, the two males took off running with one of the officers giving chase. The second officer apprehended the woman, then heard gunshots and joined the chase.

“The second officer rounded the corner of a building in the complex and found one of the male suspects armed with a gun,” Smith in an emailed media release. “The suspect was standing over the first officer who was lying injured on the ground.  The second officer fired several shots, striking and disabling the suspect.”

The suspect later died at Gwinnett Medical Center, police said. He was identified as Marcus Garner, 22, who had an outstanding warrant for probation violation. The officer was unconscious, suffering a head injury, but was not shot.

Smith said the officer regained consciousness and was released from the hospital Wednesday morning.

The woman, Shena Penrose, 27, was arrested and is in custody for an outstanding warrant. Additional charges are pending.

The second male suspect has not been found. “At this time, detective do not believe he was involved in the attack on the officer,” Smith said in the release.

“The officers will be placed on administrative lead for a minimum of three days while the preliminary investigation takes place,” Smith continued. “This is standard procedure in officer involved shootings.”

The identities of the officers were not released, pending the completion of the investigation, Smith said. The injured officer has been with the department for nine years. The second officer has been on the force for four years.
