Mill Creek Student Killed in Weekend Car Accident

Driver facing multiple charges.

A Gwinnett County man is facing multiple charges in connection with a Nov. 26 accident that killed a student.

Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said Zachary Morgan Holman, 16, and his sister Madison Holman, 11, were passengers in a 1998 Ford pickup truck being driven by Ralph Edward Whitmire Jr., 40, of Lawrenceville. According to Wright, Whitmire was traveling westbound on Bethany-Bowersville Road in Hart County at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Saturday when the vehicle left the roadway, hit a ditch and overturned. The vehicle came to rest upside down and all three occupants were ejected.

Whitmire and Madison Holman were taken to Anderson Medical Center in Anderson, S.C. for treatment of their injuries. Zachary Holman died in the crash. Madison Holman remains hospitalized and was scheduled to undergo surgery today. Whitmire’s condition is unknown.

Whitmire has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, failure to maintain lane, seat belt violation, no proof of insurance and driving with suspended, canceled or revoked registration.

Funeral services for Holman are pending. Flanigan Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
