Man Falls Asleep at Wheel, Crashes Head-on Into Gwinnett County Police Car

He was cited for failing to maintain lane and driving on the wrong side of the road

Gwinnett County police report that a 50-year-old Loganville man was involved in the wreck on S.R. 20 in Grayson that sent both drivers to the hospital.

"At about 5:00 a.m., Ofc. H. McCall was involved in a head-on collision at the intersection of Grayson Pkwy (S.R. 20) and Brackin Trace," said Cpl. Jake Smith, spokesperson for GCPD in a relase. "This intersection is at the entrance of Starling Elementary School."

Smith said James Snyder, 50, of Loganville, was in a black Acura passenger car and McCall, in his patrol car, was stopped in the left turn lane of Grayson Parkway, northbound.

"Snyder was traveling south on Grayson Pkwy. Snyder’s vehicle crossed into northbound lanes at the intersection and hit the concrete median. His vehicle hit a sign on the median, just before striking the patrol car head-on," Smith said in the release. "Both drivers were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with minor injuries.  It is likely they will both be released today."
Smith said Snyder was found at fault for the accident and cited for failure to maintain a single lane and driving on the wrong side of the road.

"Alcohol and speed were not factors in this accident. It appears that Snyder fell asleep at the wheel," Smith reported.
