Lightning caused a damaging fire Monday evening near Grayson.

No injuries were reported on the 3300 block of Kylee Dawn Circle, where a large two-story home was struck by lightning during a heavy thunderstorm a little after 6 p.m. Kylee Dawn Circle is located just south of Harbins Park in southeastern Gwinnett County.

Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said in a news release that the attic was heavily damaged; the first two floors had smoke and water damage.

The four occupants (all adults) were outside safe when firefighters arrived at 6:24 p.m. The home is located up a hill, posing a challenge for crews as they advanced attack lines, Rutledge said. According to the news release:

The fire was burning heavily in the attic above the front foyer area and made it difficult for crews to gain access.  Firefighters made a good stop on the flames and contained the majority of the fire damage to the attic.  The first and second floors sustained extensive smoke and water damage.  Additional fire crews were able to cover and protect some of the belongings as they worked to put the fire completely out.

The fire was under control at 7:03 p.m.

"We are fortunate that the family was able to escape unharmed, especially given the magnitude of the fire in the attic on arrival," Rutledge said.

"The family did the right thing … They recognized the emergency, called 9-1-1 for help, and evacuated the home.”

Rutledge said Monday afternoon storms kept crews busy. The first-due units to arrive at the house fire came directly from an auto accident with entrapments on Ozora Road.
