Lawrenceville Man Killed in Train-Car Wreck in Gwinnett County

A train struck a car and a man on the railroad tracks Tuesday near Buford Highway and Amwiler Road in Gwinnett County, according to police. One man has died and another man remains in critical condition.

The man who died in Tuesday's train-car collision in Gwinnett County has been identified.

Lawrenceville resident Tony Lungaro, 51, died after being struck by a train around 4:55 p.m. March 12 near Buford Highway in Peachtree Corners, according to Gwinnett Police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith.

Lungaro was the passenger in a white 2003 Ford 150 that was being driven by Lorenzo Wilkerson, 40, of Riverdale. They were traveling south on Buford Highway as a bronze 2003 Chevrolet Astrovan, driven by 25-year-old Lawrenceville resident Severin Gluschak, was traveling north on the same road.

Police say Gluschak attempted to turn left onto Amwiler Road in Peachtree Corners, but the car failed to yield and turned in front of the Ford, causing a collision. The Ford came to an uncontrolled stop on the railroad tracks.

Lungaro got out of the car and approached the driver's side, possibly in an attempt to assist Wilkerson, according to Smith. A train then struck Lungaro and he was killed by the impact.

Officers found the Ford to be on fire when they arrived on scene, so the fire department was called to extinguish the flames.

Wilkerson was transported to the hospital and remains in critical condition. Gluschak also was transported to the hospital but with minor injuries.

No charges have been made at this time, pending the conclusion of the investigation, according to Smith.

In February, another train off Buford Highway also hit and killed a man. Police say the victim was walking along the tracks when he was struck.
