Lawrenceville Family of Five Displaced Due to House Fire

The fire occurred Wednesday afternoon off the 300 block of Oak Springs Drive.

A family of five has been displaced due to a fire that completely destroyed their Lawrenceville home.

While no injuries have been reported, the family's two cats have not been located since the fire broke out, according to Gwinnett County Fire spokesman Lt. Colin Rhoden.

Gwinnett County firefighters were called out to the fire on the 300 block of Oak Springs Drive near Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road after the homeowner called 911 around 2:54 p.m. Wednesday (April 24).

The blaze seemed to originate in the basement of the two-story single-family home, and fire crews battled the flames from the inside and outside.

During the fire, a partial structure collapsed inside of the house from the first floor into the basement, so crews used the ladder truck and exterior firefighting hose lines to knockdown the mass of fire. There were also hidden fires inside the structure that burned through the supporting roof and caused an exterior collapse of part of the back of the house, according to Rhoden.

The ladder truck was able to extinguish the majority of the fire while firefighters protected exposures from the fire. Crews were able to control the fire by 4:45 p.m. and the fire has been extinguished.

The family of five, two adults and three children, will be displaced and will not require Red Cross assistance.

The destroyed house was too dangerous for firefighters to enter. Members from the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources were called out to assist with taking the hazardous structure down with a backhoe. Gwinnett County Fire officials stated that the fire was not suspicious in nature and is undetermined.
