GCPD to Use Automatic License Plate Readers

The new device can process up to 1,800 plates a minute.

The recently purchased threeΒ Automatic License Plate Readers with money forfeited in cases related to drug sales. Each device costs about $20,000.

The camera processing device will be mounted on patrol cars and are capable of reading up to 1,800 license plates a minute. According to GCPD, it can process parked and moving vehicles in up to four lanes of traffic, day or night, in any weather conditions. It also will work on cars passing patrol vehicles at speeds of up 75mph or coming towards the officer at up to 120mph.Β 

Also, the reader can accurately recognize plates from all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and many Arabic characters.
