Update: Gas Leak Reported at Coolray Field

Gas line was punctured by a utility crew boring near the roadway directly in front of the stadium.

Update, 11:55 a.m. from Gwinnett Fire:

The gas leak is now under control and all fire equipment has cleared the scene. The leak was stopped by the gas company at 11:02a.m. and the roadway was reopened at 11:38a.m. There were no evacuations conducted and no injuries. The gas vapors readily dissipated in the atmosphere, minimizing any potential threat to nearby businesses, schools and apartments.  Firefighters checked but found no elevated readings in the area. About 15 people at Coolray Field were asked to shelter-in-place until the leak was under control. Lawrenceville Gas remained at the scene to repair the line once they got the leak stopped.

All lanes of Buford Drive were closed between Old Peachtree Road and Tech Center Drive, Rutledge said in a released statement.

“Crews responded to a report from a passerby of a natural gas odor in the area.  Firefighters found a strong odor of gas and an active leak on arrival,” Rutledge said. “The leak was caused by a utility crew boring near the roadway on Buford Drive directly in front of the stadium.”

Rutledge said the punctured gas line is believed to be 4-to-6 inches in diameter.

No injuries or evacuations were reported.
