Couple Succumbs to Injuries From Fire on Lester Road

Virginia McMurray, age 83, and Steven Hurd, age 56 died from smoke inhalation from the fire on August 22 in Lawrenceville, Ga.

The two people taken to the hospital after a fire at a Lester Road home have died from their injuries.

They are identified as Steven Hurd, 56 and Virginia McMurray, 83. The two died over the weekend at Grady Hospital in Atlanta due to smoke inhalation said Gwinnett County Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge on behalf of the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner.

The fire began at the home at 278 Lester Road in Lawrenceville, right near the Lilburn line early in the morning on August 22. A passerby called 911 at about 4:30am after knocking on the door with no response from the couple.

Investigators say the fire began in the carport of the home, however, an exact cause has not yet been identified.

Firefighters found Hurd and McMurray in the living room. The two were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with life threatening injuries. They were later taken to Grady where both eventually succumbed to the smoke inhalation.

Wendi Anderson posted on Lilburn Patch's Facebook page saying Hurd was her uncle and identified McMurray as his girlfriend. "His entire family lives Orange County, California," said Anderson on the Facebook page hours after the fire. "His sisters, my mom and aunt, are flying to Georgia in the morning." Anderson later posted he had passed on Friday the 23rd at about 6:30pm.

According to Bill Head Funeral Home's website, McMurray passed on Saturday. Her funeral was held Tuesday at their Lilburn Tucker Chapel.
