America, the land of freedom for all Muslims

Independence Day is here!

I am a Pakistani Muslim living in America for the past fifteen years and belong to the oldest Muslim community established in America, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. During these 15 years, I have realized that being a US citizen is truly a blessing. Bravely overcoming many obstacles, America has become a free nation for many people like me. America has and continues to provide many types of freedom, most importantly, the freedom of religion. I can freely practice my religion and not be afraid of persecution.

Throughout history, Islam’s message of loyalty and patriotism has been dramatically blurred. Instead of teaching bloodshed war and hatred, Islam teaches to love others and one’s homeland. The Quran states, “O ye who believe, obey God and obey the Prophet and obey those in authority from among you” (4:60).

Today, I live in a country where I feel protected and happy. On this Independence Day and every day of my life, I am blessed to be a Muslim American, and I am grateful for the privileges and responsibilities that go with being a good citizen.
